Alright guys, I've got the ability to offer forged flat 52100 in 2 sizes.

Before I get to the details, I need to mention that this is going to be forged with a power hammer, and will NOT be surface ground, or shiney, etc. I will be forging it between stop blocks, so it will be RELATIVELY uniform as far as thickness and width. It will be forge annealed, (not spheroid) and workable by conventional methods IE: ground, drilled or machined. Okay, now that that's out fo the way..

See next post down for new lower price!

1/4" by 1 1/4" (a little wider actually) available in lengths from 10" to 10 feet I'll sell for $3 per inch plus shipping.

3/16" by 7/8" (actually probably an inch, but I'm leaving some room for error) Again, avalable from 10" to 10 feet, for only $2 per inch plus shipping.

If you need a custom size, or want blade blanks forged, inquire at the listed Email.

Turn around time will be about a week to 10 days after payment is received before the steel ships, all the steel will be hot cut to length a little long (10" will probably be closer to 10 1/2" Etc.)

payment via pay-pal, check or money order.

To place an order, please write an Email with the heading : 52100 flat bar to tony@ysforge.com

Thanks a bunch guys!

Tony

hmm, not many bites... price to high?

okay, how 'bout half price so you guys can see if you like it?

$1.50 per inch for the big stuff

$1 per inch for the smaller stuff

Hey Tony

I'm one of those stock removal guys that would love to try 52100. The reluctance comes from the sizes. For me, a 3/16 thick blank would probably be ending up with a blade 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 deep. The 7/8 size seems like it would end up a pretty steep wedge. Without a forge, I'd have a hard time putting in curves as well.

If I was choosing, I'd be thinking more like 3/32 x 7/8 - 5/32 x 1 1/2 - 3/16 x 1 1/2. I know I'd be grinding down a ways to get a good surface - but with either of those starting thicknesses / widths, I'd have to grind to half.

I may be the only one thinking this way though. I'd be interested to hear what others have to say.

Rob!

Good question, hadn't thought of it, I don't think I've ever made a knife entirely by stock removal, so I don't think of things like this... :)

Would you guys prefer something like 3/16 by 1 1/2" or 3/32 by say 1"?

Let me know how you guys feel, I'm forging this stuff down to order anyways, if more than 2 people want the thinner stock, it won't be custom anymore, and the prices would probably be the same as the earlier posted prices.

Thanks for the input!

Tony

If the prices were cheap (i.e. if other people are interested as well), I'd buy ~$15-$20 or so of the 3/32" x 1"+ 52100 steel to try out. I've been learning knifemaking with 1095, and it would be nice to try out some other steel. I'm not too picky on the width, though I don't think I want to make any knives less than 1" wide.

I set up stop blocks this afternoon for 3/32" as well as 1/8" and I feel that 1/8" is probably better, as I was ending up with about 3/32" thickness after grinding a blade out of it, and the 3/32" stock ended up about 1/16" after grinding, which is too thin for almost all the knives I make.

Also, the 1/8" thickness leaves me with 1 1/8" to 1 1/4" width pretty well with the stock I forge it from. all surfaces need to be ground, but the hammer doesn't leave very deep, or very much pitting, so you can get pretty close to the full thickness for you're blades.

How's that sound? 1/8" by 1" plus 52100 for like $1.25 an inch? (durn, I'm giving the stuff away) :D

Tony

I think I can accomodate 3/16" by 1 1/2" and for the time being at least, I think $1.50 per inch sounds good to me.

Email me, and we'll work out details.

Tony

Both the 1/8 and 3/16 in those sizes are of interest to me - probably $100 - $150 order?Rob!
