Once again I'm sitting here with my mind wanderin'...

This time I'm wondering about the 52100 steel that Rex Walter supplies to us knife makers. If I remember correctly, Rex has to forge the steel down from ingots in order for us to get it in manageable dimensions. Is the steel forged (by Rex and company) at 1625 degrees Max.? I think that's the coach Fowler recommended max. forging temp. for 52100. I realize that there is benifit in the reduction of the steel at the proper temp., primarily refined grain structure. So should I order it at a size that I need to reduce by a large margin so that I can control the forging temp's or does Rex keep things at a reasonable temp. for us knifemakers so that we can get a more "manageable" dimension of steel with all of the benefits of having been reduced (forged) at the proper temp's?

Rex, Are you out there?

Anyone?

Thanks,
Rick

I get mine from him in the largest possible size that i can forge 2-3 inches square. that way I have control over it as long as possible.

Does anyone have contact info for Rex?

By the way Bill.. I want that Bowie that you have on your Avatar. I'll trade you 5 gallons of "type A" for it:D

Rick

Thanks Bill... I could maybe go 10 gallons ot type A for the Bowie but that's my final offer:D :D :D

OK. lets see if I divide what that knife sold for by ten that makes your texaco oil worth about seven hundred dollars a gallon. Yeh sure It's worth it.:D :D

Now Bill... You know all the trouble that I went through to find this stuff! Heck,I was figuring that it must be gold since it's so hard to find, and when you do, it aint cheap! Looks like we're back to 5 gallons;) :D ;) :D ;) :D

Rick

Well I'd go for it if the knife wasn't already sold. Man am I sorry.:( well maybee we can start work on a new one. Maybee some like this;

Yah, something like that would be nice but we'd have to "purdy" it up some. Kinda average looking the way it is:D ;) In all seriousness... That thing is gorgeous! Is that elk for the handle? I guess you might just make it as a full timer yet. Keep making them like that one and you won't have any problems.

Rick

Ok I have fifteen. Do I here Twenty? Twenty?

Thanks Shane. What corner of Wyoming do you live in Is it nere Belfouche?

I'm over here in Sherdian. Bout thirty miles from MT. And four and a half hours from Rvierton.Depending on the weather. LAst trip I made over the mountain I hit a Spring storm...tool me two hours to go 48 miles. Figured I'd end up froze to the wheel like a tongue to a sled
in the middle of a blizzard.

When are you me and Rick gonna cross paths in Riverton. I'm thinking we oughta have a High Performance Hammmer-In, kind of christen the new shop site? What do you think. We could just roll up on Ed with some steel and build some knives....I'll bring the quench oil, a forge, some hammers, and a tent.

I got time in August! What do you guys think! We could start our own social club!

Funny you should should ask. Ed and I talked of doing that very same thing later this year. I am sure that if it comes to pass that we wil try and let everyone know about it.
