52100 Millitary

I just got mine in the mail yesterday from a good member on BST.

The fit-and-finish is absolutely outstanding. I love the larger handle screws and barrel spacers. Centered, smooth, fantastic lockup, typical above average sharpness out of the box....

The BG-42 version was my first experience will ball-bearing steel, and I fell in love with the edge-holding and relative ease-of-sharpening. Takes a very fine edge at lower angles and holds it exceptionally well. Can't wait to try out the 52100. And good on Spyderco for releasing one of their classic models in a classic carbon steel!

Joe, I first applied a thin layer of mustard on the blade and dab more mustard onto the blade using bubble wrap to form the pattern. The mustard was left there for about 45min before I washed it off.

I have not use the knife much as I have a number of rotation. I used it to open letters and cut a few boxes. It still look the same.

It is fairly easy to replicate. Good luck and enjoy the process.

D'oh!
You didn't tape off the pivot area or lockface?
Won't be too detrimental, but still steps I would've taken...

I'd imagine the smoothness will be lost for a while. Between the flats of the tang against the washers and the detent ball against it as well. Could be wrong, though.

The blade is as smooth as before the patina. Lockup is solid and the blade drops freely when the lock is disengaged.

I just got back from 10 days camping at the Buffalo Chip campground in Sturgis SD and beat the heck out of mine. Cut about 200 pieces of para cord(throwing it down into the ground between cuts) for tie downs for us and neighbors to hold down our camp trailers from 50mph wind gusts. Used it as an ice pick for at least 200lbs of ice. It still shaved arm hair after all the cord cuts but stopped after the 5th day of chopping ice(I learned to flip the blade backwards when chipping ice too late) but still sharp enough for real world cutting.

That's way to use it

I am amazed that it still shaved arm hair after it was thrown repeatedly into the ground.

Ground was hard when we got there before the rain storms so only about the first quarter actually took the abuse of "ground storage" lol. The bottom 3/4 did most of the cutting of the para cord but still was shaving sharp.

I spent about 10 minutes with it and a sharpmaker. I put exactly 20 alternating side strokes on each side with the brown stones, fine stones and ultra fine stones at the 40 deg inclusive side, all on the flat side of the triangle not the corner. 120 strokes total. Knife is sharper then when I received it and it was crazy sharp out of the box. Original bevel was just under 20 dps so it just put a tiny micro bevel on it. Eventually I will bring the secondary bevel down to 15 dps with the EP and a 20 micro but it worked so well out of the box I'll just touch it up like this a few times and save some steel.

I carried the 52100 all summer break. I like it a lot. It is a strange animal compared to the modern steels! I felt like it needed constant attention, but it did hold a great edge!

Constant attention as in constant touch-ups on the edge?
