I'm hoping you guys will help me out with my first time using 52100. It came from "New Jersey" annealed. I do stock removal only, no heat is imparted to the blade during profiling, grinding. Grinding is done with files.
I understand 52100 is more difficult to treat than simple carbon steels. Would ya'll verify my procedure here?
1650F, for 5 minutes, quench in oil
1350F, quench in oil
1250F, cool to black, quench in oil
1475F, for 10 minutes, quench in oil.
temper 400 or so for 2 hours x 2
I realize blood and sweat are shed by knifemakers who have developed refined heat treatment procedures for certain steels. I would like to say that I appreciate, to a great extent, the information given freely on this forum, especially when it comes to the "best" heat cycling for a given steel. Thank you so much for your thoughts, time, and consideration.
