551-1702 Knifeworks Exclusive

Good read. Thanks! My 551 came with olive AWT scales which really change the look and feel. I've always liked the KW Limited's, and how they (Roger and staff) stand behind what they sell.
Yeah, me too, Joe.:thumbsup: for Roger and the folks at KW.

Saw it. Liked it. Bought one. It came today, 2 days after shipping. First class USPS got here as quick as a Priority 2-Day package would have. Good job, USPS.

The Grip came dead centered, very sharp with even bevels, and slightly tight in the action which is just how I like mine. The blade steel is one of my two favorites for folders, the other being 154CM. The blade finish is not quite as bright as my regular 551S Grip. It's not stonewashed like the Ritters were, but it's not shiny either. Looks like a good working finish.

I like micarta so the scale material was good for me and the finish and texture on it is just about perfect for a good comfortable hold on the knife. Micarta and G10 both work well for me, but I'll usually choose micarta first if I have a choice. I like how it feels both dry and wet and it's proven to be a pretty tough scale material. And it's usually textured a little less aggressively than a lot of G10 scales are.

Roger even got the color right... black. That's the only scale color I buy anymore. I don't like bling, baubles, or bright colors. And I like my tools to look like tools so when the pic showed black scales, I was sold. Good job Knifeworks. You even kept the price under $200. I'm 100% satisfied with this Grip.

This is the first dealer exclusive or LE Grip that I've actually liked. I may even get a backup and store it for future need... and I never do that.

D'oh. My brain kept on thinking it was the 531 despite it saying 551 in the title.

Micarta is a departure for BM - I like it! A mini is sure to follow ;).

Jimmy,

Thanks for hanging around here, and never let the gobblers get you down. Please ask Les sometime in passing if he remembers Pete and Professor. Pete's passed on, but the two of us used to room at Blade, drink Scotch, spend way too much money, and drive the BM booth folks and pretty much everybody else at the show crazy. Hope to see you at Blade sometime.

Cool. Yeah I may be going this year actually. Not up to me though.

After checking these out, I went with a pair of Ritters as back ups while still available.

I got mine on Monday and am a perfectly satisfied. Great fit and finish and very sharp. Definitely thinking of ordering a backup.

The only thing I really feel like changing up is the clip. What kind of options are out there for silver? I like the black clip but am not crazy for the looks once they start to show a lot of wear.

IIRC, Benchmade has a silver deep carry clip as well as the black. My Foray's still on the way back from Lifesharp but I believe it has a silver deep carry clip.

Aftermarket deep carry clips are also available for Benchmades. I don't have any but I've seen them on other people's knives. Just don't know where to get them.

I think it is actually a pretty reasonable price considering it's about the same as the 940-1501. Still cheaper than aftermarket scales and you get to keep the Lifesharp service, which is a huge benefit.

You get to keep the lifesharp service with aftermarket scales too. Benchmade is pretty good about honoring that.

I would post pics, but must plead stupidity. I did outfit mine with a rattlesnake knot paracord fob in red, white and blue.

I do pledge to the forum that I will try to learn to post (possibly easy w my galaxy s5?) pics soon.

Nice!

Less expensive than a Build Your Griptilian with G10 and CPM 20CV + taxes and shipping.
