6" Fixed Blade, 1095, Full Tang..........Is The ESEE6 The Only One?

I'm in a bit of a quandary, that I'm sure some of my fellow knife buffs will understand.

Due to arthritis, I put my beloved BK9 up for WTT, as I don't plan to do too much chopping in the future (no bites after the five day mark, other than a couple of members interested in buying it). However, I would still like to be able to do a bit of batoning. I don't really want to shorten my BK9, and convert it to a drop point........

Ideally, I'd like to buy a hybrid of the BK2 and BK10...........BK handle, 6" long, 3/16" thick 1095, thumb ramp, and a drop point. Ritter and Becker teamed up to design "this", but Rowan got the contract. I can only find one dealer online, it's in the USA, and the knife would be over $200 CDN to my door. I've asked Ka-Bar to look into making one, without the screw in weights.

The ESEE6 is beyond my budget of $125 to $150 CDN, and I can't seem to find a similar knife with a 6" blade. (I don't want a BK7.)

So....
I just ordered an old stock Rat RC-5 online, but in doing so, I have conceded the thumb ramp, and one inch in length (I wish I could find a RAT RC-6, but they seem to be rare).

Is the ESEE6 the only true 6 incher out there?

Ontario RAK sounds like it might fit the bill. But its handle is a bit shorter, its pummel has a spiked glass breaker and its got big choil. The big choil acts as part of its guard and lets one really choke up for fine work though. I'm sure others will come along with outer suggestions soon. For 5160 steel the RD 6 can be heavily abused.

I looked at that Roguer, but my palm is 4 1/4" wide :)

It's hard to list list everything, however, that is why I like the BK9 handle.

Tops has a lot of 1095 offerings. I'm not familiar with most of their designs, but maybe worth checking out also.

Yes Tops makes pretty good knives in 1095. I'm sure they have some 6" models. Reasonable prices too.

Schrade schf9. I'm a huge Becker fan, but I will have to admit the schf9 is a ton of knife for under $50. Big handle, 1095, made in Taiwan. I keep one in my truck.

Hey Creaky, I'm not a fan of the recurve blade. I have an SCHF51 on order from amazon. If it's blade is too short, I might order an SCHF52.

Either the Schrade 7 inch frontier, or the 5 inch. I bought one of the 7 inch, and was so impressed I bought another as a backup knife in my truck. They are 1095 steel with a good HT, especially for a 29 dollar knife! For that price, I would buy one just to check out, they are not bad at all.

Ranger RD 6 Bush made from 1095 does come to mind. I use my standard Ranger RD 6 from heavy abuse to bushy craft stuff. The Bush RD 6 fills your metal and width requirements.

Guys, I'm in Canada, so I doubt I could meet my budget with a custom made knife from the USA. I know I wouldn't for a Canadian made knife, as material here has prices that are much higher than the dollar exchange would indicate. Thanks :)

ATJ999, I have the SCHF51 ordered. If it suits me, but the blade is too short, I may order the 52. With blades that have a choil, as well as a non sharpened portion, you need to get it in your hands, to know that it has enough cutting length to suit. Thanks :)

Roguer, One of those would be hard to find in Canada, and the handle is a bit short. Thanks for trying :)

Update:

The SCHF51 didn't have enough cutting length for me, so my buddy bought it. The 52 has a wider choil, than the 51, so there is a lot of "wasted" blade there....I'll pass on that one.

I received the Ontario RAT5, but the handle (same as ESEE6?) was not for me (& TKC G10 scales are $50, plus shipping, USD, so $100ish CDN to my door.), so the RAT7 is out. Amazon.ca is soon going to be pi$$ed off at me, but what's a fella to do when crappy tire is your only local knife dealer.

Other than butchering my BK9 (which I will not do, due to losing temper?

), I'm going to have to "up" my budget, to get an actual 6" +/- cutting edge, 1095, drop point (no swedge), with a handle long enough to fit my wide mitt.

So, let's say my budget is now $200 CDN, and I'm willing to do slight mods only (I always strip and polish my Beckers, and can make a Kydex sheath, if req'd).....

I'll try to find out how much a Doug Ritter RSK Mk2 Perseverance is to my door. Does anyone know if the handle identical to the BK9? My bare hand is a snug fit in the BK handle.

Have any of you tried the TOPS Silent Hero? I found a good price on one, not too much over $200 to my door.

Thanks for the discussion

I believe Ontario offers an old hickory with a 6" blade, and most models are full tang and all use 1095.

The BK12 (Ritter perseverance), has the same handle of the other Beckers. But if it is a bit large, the TKC G10 handles are a bit slimmer than stock and th Micarta handles can be sanded to be thinner.

I still think custom is the way to go. There are a lot of talented knife makers her on the forums. Austin Goldman (sorry if I spelled that wrong) makes some affordable blades in 1095. He uses a variety of steels, but most of his 1095 makes are around $100 USD. If you're willing to make your own sheath and settle for a more basic handle material, I don't see why someone couldn't make you a decent working knife for your budget.

Love my Silent Hero. Perfect balance of everything you want in a knife, and damn near indestructible. Chops surprisingly well too...the lanyard hole and the hole beneath the choil allow you to tie on a paracord D-guard, completely securing the knife.
