Went pretty lightweight today. Well, maybe not lightweight, but at least packing small.

It's a Trangia stove I bought from a surplus store. I've made a few of my own pot stands and windscreens for it, but the old school Sterno box works well too. It's a pot stand and windscreen in one, and it folds flat for easy carry.

It isn't the lightest, but when I carry a GI canteen w/ cup, I don't really have room for a circular stand and windscreen. This is easy to slide into my pack.

Here is another set up for it:

Everything pictured fits into the pot and then into a stuff sack:

In all honesty, the REI kit works better but I like to mix it up and try new things every now and then.

Nice. Looks like a good day. I was wishing I had a pistol on my person today on my hike..I saw some fresh bear sign..and thought "great! no gun" But I didnt see anything other than chipmonks. How about you? Any wildlife spotted? Gene

TFin04, hola

Aha, I though I recognized the Trangia bit, it was the Sterno bit throwing me off. I'd not seen those and it looked too well crafted to be home-baked. I took them as coming together as a unit.

Makes sense.

+1 on the mix and match thing. I've currently got a less pretty version of your wire job running myself. Smaller grid mesh just wrapped in foil. It's mainly a windshield for a gas burner but if I pull of some of the foil it's a serviceable stand to go round some hexi blocks. Most ambitious to date was trying to come up with a shield /stand with a simpler, smaller, MSR Heat Exchanger type aspect, using copper sheet from a model shop. Thus far it's evaded me as more trouble than it's worth, so I go back to KISS and bin it off. Given MRS quote a 25% increase in fuel efficiency with theirs though the idea nags away at me.

That must be the Penosha loop. Great choice for an outing!

Indeed it is. We should hit up the trail some time.

As for wildlife, I saw a ton of chipmunks, some squirrel, lots of deer scat and tracks, and what I believe to be the back end of a deer running away from me.

Yesterday was more of a workout hike than an enjoyment hike. I was moving along pretty quickly and certainly would have spooked whatever was in earshot. Still saw a few things though.
