A 6" petty knife, 1095, stabilized tamarind and ebony handle. I am pretty happy with how this turned out. I use little brass pins inside the handle to align the two pieces and as I tapered the handle one of those broke thru, but other than that it's pretty clean compared to my previous efforts.

What the photos don't show is how well it slices. This is the first knife I've made where I was happy with slicing carrots. I finally made the grind acute enough, it slips right thru carrots like they're barely there.

I also made a 5" petty (cherry + tamarind handle) but it didn't turn out well and I had to chop the tip off. I'm giving it to the next person I meet that needs a small kitchen knife. I did experiment with CA glue as a grain filler. Sort of happy with how that worked, but I think I'm just going to avoid porous unstabilized woods.

These are the last blades I'll be grinding on my 1x30 and 4x36 sanders. I did the finish sanding with my new 2x42 and it's so much easier to control.

And while I was working on the handles I wished I had some tiny chisels about the width of the slots I need to cut in the front of the handle to accept the tang. I swear I sat and wondered for a while where I could get chisels that skinny before I realized where I was.

And of course now a friend wants some chisels... :)

they both look great.

If you had not mentioned taking the tip off the 2nd one, I would never have thought it was a fix.

Whom ever you give that to will be tickled!

If I was your neighbor, I'd come over and "borrow" it, then just forget to give it back!

Very nice. I've been wondering about those wa handles, do you just kind of start grinding a stop sign shape until it looks right...or is there a way to lay it out?

Looked for a good tutorial awhile back but couldn't find one

I'm no expert but I'll tell you how I do it. I do most of it with a #3 bench plane. First I taper the handle if it's going to be tapered. Then I lay out a stop sign shape on either end with pencil and a ruler. The exact proportions are subjective. Then I draw lines on the sides that connect the corners of the stop sign.

Once laid out I clamp it to a bench with a corner in the air and start planing. It's not very stable so I get little flats on the corners and rotate. On the 2nd pass its stable and I just plane until I hit the lines.

I tried it without a layout a few times and it was hit or miss for me.
