After cutting the blade from the bandsaw and for final shaping. What grit do you guys usually start with :)
I use 80 grit :)

I use 36, 60, 80, 120, 220, 320. I have heard some makers go from 60 to 120 to 220 up to 320 or 400. I have wanted to experiment with that, but just haven't had time lately. I'm thinking if it works well, then I can save some belts/money...always a good thing! :D -Matt-

After the bandsaw: 50,120,220,320,400, satin finishing belts. If I am going to a mirror polish then add 600, 9 micron, then black buff, green chrome buff, white alluminum oxide fine buff.

36, 100, 220. If it is a working knife, I will chase over it by hand with 220. If it is to have a finer finish, I will hand sand on down to where I want it to be.

Depends on the size and thickness of the knife.

Small knives and folder blades start off with an 80 grit.

Most others -a 60 grit.

Choppers and bowies -a 36 grit.

Norton Blaze belts are good!

60,120,220,320,400. i havent done any hand sanding to get higher but its what i would do if i didnt want the satin finsh. this order works for me.

36, 60, 180, 320, 400, 600, 1000, 1200 and then I go crazy finding deep scratches I've missed and start over at 320 and do it all over again.:(

SR Johnson posted this process a while back which I have taken to using with great success. Well I don't use his process exactly, I add a belt or two that he doesn't.

I use 36 grit to rough out, then 60 grit, then A100 (Trizac 220grit), then A45 (Trizac 400 grit), then 400, 600, 800 cork belts with green compound. After that it is really close to a mirror finish, any hand sanding from here is a piece of cake or getting the final mirror finish is pretty easy. Also the finish the 800 grit cork makes is a great finish by itself.

Take Care,
Sean
