Well, I finally picked this little beauty the other day. I've been a fan of the Rukus and it's little cousin ever since they were first released, but had never pulled the trigger on one. Now, in the year they're being discontinued, I finally did it.

How appropriate that the year they discontinue the model and come out with their first assisted-opening Axis locks that they should decide to make this beauty--a fusion of both. That's right, folks. It's an AO Axis Mini Rukus!

The knife snaps open with way more authority than any blade this heavy should...and it's smooth as silk! The black and blue micarta scales are done as a single slab, unlike the dual-scaled micarta and G10 original. As I'm sure you know, it's a real beast of a folder! I found it interesting that they chose to do this one in 154CM as opposed to the original's D2.

The knife came shaving sharp out of the box with a light coating of oil on all the surfaces. The blackened furniture really makes this knife stand out, I think! Double-thick liners, an open back for easy maintenance, and thick contoured scales for a secure grip.

The AO has the same safety as Benchmade's auto-axis folders.

No problems with alignment, either! I know a few folks have had complaints about crooked blades lately, but not on this one. No blade play in either direction.

All in all, a very nice package! I think that if they produced this as a standard model it might get more attention. It's a really slick piece of work, and I can't wait to put it through its paces!

Whoops! You're right. Couldn't remember exactly off the top of my head. Shame on me. :p

Very interesting. Benchmade sure did a great job with those huh? Is it a full size or a mini? Nvm i see its the mini. Great catch there.

Thanks! They didn't even release these ones for purchase. Dealers received one for every $5000 they spent at SHOT. A few made it out into the average joe's hands, but I'm lucky enough to have the dealer connection. :)

The Rukus is BM's only knife that I would consider buying. This one looks even better.

Thanks for the pics!

For 'Mini' it certainly fills the hand nicely!

I'm guessing a full-size one would be a bit much for EDC.

Haven't had the chance to put it through the rounds yet, but I must say: For a guy who usually turns up his nose at AOs this one is sweeeeet. The AO Axis mechanism is smooth like glass. I hope I don't get the mafia on my back when I say I think it's better than Kershaw's! :D

On a fun note, the BM Butterfly in the pics is a blue anodized titanium cutout! They're making them for dealer displays now, and I snagged a few for myself 'cause they're just so nifty. :)

Depends on what Kershaw models you're talking about.... :p

And cool on that anodized blue Ti butterfly--how much did that run you?

That thing is sweet, I'm a big Rukus fan. I didn't know this model even existed until I saw a few on ebay. Auto-Axis sounds good.

Actually, being a dealer I've handled just about every AO Kershaw out there. My opinion still stands, though I fully recognize that it's a personal preference thing. :)

The Ti butterfly didn't run me anything since it was payed for with co-op dollars, but I'd figure it wouldn't be more than $10 or so. I'll have to check. I've joked about sharpening one and making a BM shuriken. :p

It's an assisted-opening Axis, actually. Great model. If you get the chance I highly recommend picking one up.

That is some seriously pretty to my eyes G-10, and cool thumb studs! I have the standard 615 and it feels like assist if I do my part. This is still my favorite hard use folder even if it is slightly porky. Sorry to hear it's in the last year of production, but then again it should become a classic like my 812 and 735BT.

Yeah, that BM butterfly would make a cool item for all of the Ti junkies out there... (I'm one too! :D)

Are all of the Rukus models discontinued?
