And it turned out to be rabid too.

He seems so nonchalant about the whole thing.

Man Survives Bobcat Attack by Choking Animal to Death

WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. — A 62-year-old Florida man depended on his instincts when a bobcat attacked him, and it paid off — he survived, the bobcat didn't.

Dale Rippy, a resident of Wesley Chapel, Florida, was pulling trashcans back to his house May 30 when he saw what he thought was a large cat. After realizing the animal was actually a bobcat, he set the trashcans down and prepared for an attack.

Having grown up on a farm, Rippy said he knew the bobcat would attack when it didn’t run away after seeing him.

“When it growled, I knew it was going to jump and bite me,” he said.

The animal then jumped on him and began to scratch and bite. Rippy said he knew if he could get a good hold on the animal, he would be able to choke it, even if that meant letting the bobcat take a couple of bites.

“I started choking it when got a good hold,” he said. “I choked it ‘til he died. I got scratched up pretty good.”

Rippy never had to go to the hospital, but was examined at a doctor’s office due to puncture wounds on his stomach and scratches.

After the attack, his neighbor called the police, who then called animal control. After the animal was inspected, it was found to be infected with rabies.

Rippy said now, he and his neighbor that helped him after the attack have to have rabies shots.

“It attacked me because it was sick,” he said.

Rippy said he has lived in his home 25 miles north of Tampa for 13 years and, although he has seen a panther and other animals in the wooded area behind his house, that was the first time he had ever seen a bobcat.

He also said those around him were very surprised about the attack and how he saved himself by killing the animal.

“The bobcat was big enough that it could have really hurt somebody, especially since it had rabies,” he said.

No Way!!! Wesley Chapel is literally 10min from my house. thats crazy, and its very unusual to see a bobcat around there, although i have seen a couple before. their not that big about the size of a medium size dog and usually scare off easy but i guess with rabies their a totally different animal

Me too! I live in New Tampa. I see Bobcats all the time around this area.

My son and I practice Kendo at USF on Wednesday nights at the rec. center. Man it is a small world.

nice i might have to check that out sometime... oh yeah sorry Rich S for hijacking your thread. where do you camp or hike around there?

He's a real man , he doesn't need a knife !!...On another forum I just read about a PH in Africa who had to take care of some rabid lions .The people they killed were not eaten just torn apart and shredded !!! They also had to be shot numerous times to be killed !

Bobbies are tough little buggers, and a rabid one is a scary thought. Tough old guys, mother nature's weapons of precision destruction, I'm just glad he didn't just brush it off and not get it checked out like a lot of the older gents in my neck of the woods. Bet he smokes, drinks and eats red meat to.

THAT is the type of mindset that seperates survivors from sheeple! Not a mall Ninja just a man that saw a problem that he had to address. Many would have tried to run. Kudos to him.

Damn, I hope that I would be that tough...but I don't want to find out any time soon.:D

That's AWESOME! It's good to hear of "real men" instead of hearing about some wuss who'd have just been eaten.

Yea , hats off to the guy.

I would not want to tangle with a bobcat unless I had no choice, cannot even fathom something as big as a panther or mountain lion.

man this will make you watch your back the next time your're out.

and a sick animal too.

may we all be this good on our feet at 62.
if we make it.

Go to church and garden, and you'll make it to 62.

Makes you wonder about those groundhogs too, doesn't it? The ones eating the engine wiring, no problem. The ones eating the engine, WATCH OUT!

If a rabid Bobcat ever attacked anyone around here, the person would be found shredded and dead, a cellphone jammed to their ear. "Come help me." Oh. Too late.

we were talking about this subject after i shot a rabid raccoon last Christmas eve.
and no i wasn't stopping for a snack again.
just weeks before the folks down the way, their dog got mixed up with one of these and killed the raccoon. the dog was then in quarantine.

question is, it's common to find a dead animal in the woods, if one dies infected with rabies and other animals feed on it would there not be more cases then like with the bobcat?

and what about black bear? have you heard of a case involving one of these?

i'm trying the coffee diet first.
if i die before 62 then if i were you i'd go to church and garden.:D

.

remember when i had the groundhog thread?
someone was kind enough to post back to try Irish Spring soap.
which did slow down the critters but when i put the soap under the hood of the old Ford, and checked under the hood this week i found that they started to chew on the soap.
but they are not going into the cab for now and they seem to like soap better then wire.
now at least when they do chew on the wires they will have clean teeth.:D
