66 Calf Roper v 68 Buckaroo Opinions

Now I guess I better find what handle material I want and go from there. I was thinking wood, but the jigged bone is looking nice.

Thanks, the #66 in the photo is Purple Sage Jigged Bone and the #68 is Autumn Gold Jigged Bone but they are pretty dang close. The dyed bones can vary even in the same batch and that is one of the reasons I like bone (and Stag) as they are all unique in some way.

Wow if you wouldn't have mentioned it I would've thought they were the same.
I've been looking at a spring green bone that looks nice.

I really like the looks of the Spring Green bone too and have been looking at another pattern with it.

Here is my modest collection of the GEC #66 ...the ebony is their stockman. LOVE all of the #66's. Had a #68 Jack in antique bone...really liked that knife also, although I did sell it... (full disclosure... I have sold 3 #66's also....two of which I'd love to have back).

I do prefer the serpentine shape of the 66. To be honest, I am going to cull down my knife collection....NONE of my #66's be be part of the blood letting. Either way you win.....in my humble opinion...you win by a bigger score with the #66.

Let us know where you land!!!

I have a bloodwood buckaroo. I like it a lot and you may be able to still find one somewhere. what struck me as unique as far a cattle knives or stockman go it has almost no blade rub. Alł the blades sit nice and tight and the pulls are smooth and easy with good snap, no half stops. Can't compare with the 66 as I don't have one. I don't think they made them in too many different handle variations. There are black linen micarta ones though. Seems like the 66calf roper stockman has more options and yeah that version of the purple sage is very lovely if it's anything like the autumn gold. I have a pemberton in the autumn gold and it's my favorite bone for its color and jigging style, deeper less regular patterning, almost like worm groove.

Here's a couple of comparison shots. My preference is the 66, as I think the serpentine shape adds a little something and in the slim configuration it's extremely discreet, but the 68 is a very solid choice.

68 (3-blade) in green jigged bone, 66 slim in cocobolo, 66 mink skinner in sea glass acrylic:
