The heat treat is what makes a Rockstead really shine. And no, they don't recomend that you send it in for sharpening. Go look at their website, it doesn't say that anywhere... They just offers a sharpening service like any maker does.

Victorf is correct, harder steel=harder to polish. Combine the mirror polish, expert heat treat, precision sharpness, and flawless craftsmanship and it's easy to see what makes a Rockstead worth it's price.

Price is, however, relative from person to person. Some people spend big bucks for Limited Edition ZT's or rare CRK's, I sure wouldn't pay those aftermarket prices, but some people feel it's worth it.
I feel like a Rockstead would be worth it...

Don't Rocksteads have a type of coating layered on top of the mirror finish that increases resistance to scratches and so forth?

And how come their fixed blades are significantly more expensive than their folders?

I believe it's not so much their fixed blades that are more expensive (look at their neck knife which can be had for WAY less than any of their folders) but the size. Bigger blades = more work for them especially when it comes to polishing.

How much of a mirror finish on a production knife can be done pre heat treat? The reason I ask is because the mirror finishes you describe as passable have to be carried out an a blade that is heat treated. I wonder if rockstead has an advantage with being able to carry out certain grits pre heat treat.

The thing to remember is that a Rockstead is in ZDP is so hard that the mirror finish holds up extremely well even with significant use. Similar to how a watch made from tungsten resists scratching and desk dives. If you do manage to scratch the ZDP blade its usually very fine and hard to spot in most lighting.

Heat treating is an interesting process for steel alloys, interesting fact is they all react differently post heat treat, one type will grow while the other shrink and a few remain fairly constant in size. When exposed to different quenching, the scenario change again.

In general, for final dimension's sake, base on the above mentioned characteristic, for a blade steel, it is a waste of time to carry out certain grits pre heat treat. In general machining practice, most would rough out a work piece, save a workable tolerance to final dimension, heat treat, after, depends on hardness, finish is normally with abrasive grinding to the final dimension requirement and if polishing is needed, that is also factored in before the grinding process.

Unless alloys is like 17-4PH, heat treat is by precipitation. Two methods are normally use, one is at 900* for an hour or 500* for 9 hours for a surface hardness of low 40 RC. Personally, I prefer the latter, low and slow just gives me a better feeling. Beside stable after heat treat, its Low 40 RC is also machinable without grinding - unless a grind finish is specified per plan.

What you said is true. Other than the CRK's low hardness, Spyderco's harder steel also resist scratch to a higher degree. In general, in order to induce a scratch, something has to have a hardness surpassing the base blade. So, in the case of Rockstead YSR7(65 RC) or ZDP(+66 RC), unless the user is stupid, chance of running into something that hard would be a rarity.

YMMV.

Not always. It depends on your willingness to release a specific amount of funds into one item. Some people tie up their money differently than others, depends more on their need for such an item. I know some people that are pretty much broke, live in a house some would consider a dump, yet they drive a $75K truck decked out with all kinds of stuff.

So true, my man! I myself is not rich by any means. However, I don't have concerns for income and own my own home here in paradise and if something tinkles my fancy, well....

Ex:-

One or two of my table tennis(Ping Pong) paddle, each, equals to a CRK.

In one of my highly performance modded OEM looking sleeper:

Needless to say, the list goes on......

And you are correct - "It depends on your willingness to release a specific amount of funds into one item."

Since we are all so very different. In my case, many other items.

Aloha!

Why is your car in this thread?

Maybe instead of looking for flaws in my posting.

Perhaps you might get the jest of my response to another member's comment.

Or maybe you can take your narcissistic off-topic crap elsewhere.

This is a thread about Rockstead folders, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm looking at the Hizen really hard right now. But 765 bucks is a hard pill to swallow

Would have to save up for quite a bit

1. This post shown that, probably you are young and not very well off to afford the $765 entry price for a Hizen.

2. Although your Location is "on the Map", based on your other posting, you are from SoCal.

3. I pointed out in one of your post, better to know the dimension on your CRK's pivot bushings/relating components before any metal removal - started your discontent with me. That thread proved to me you have a shallow mechanical knowledge base.

4. Your assessment of me being narcissistic - perhaps you are simply...this.....it is wise for me to withheld any comments!?

I do believe my profile on you is fairly accurate.

I get it that you never recovered from the thread you and I had the disagreement on whether you or I lacking the understanding on the functionality of a knife.

Suggest you stop snapping at my heals at every turn I make and move on.

Since post #9, I have cancelled the Higo order and ordered this instead:

You're a real prick dude...

What does someone's budget have to do with this? And why are you pointing out his location? That almost comes across as a threat...

Do you really feel like you're superior to someone with a lower budget and a lesser understanding of mechanics? That's pretty sad, and I think you're the one that is "shallow"...

I'm sure I know a lot of things that you don't, but I don't try to flex my ego about it:rolleyes:

You and I never had any disagreements in the past and I do appreciate some of your previous positive/objective exchanges!

I know you followed lots of my posting/thread and probably aware the few that were persistent at snapping at my heals. They have given up on me except "Krissig12". Put yourself in my shoes and ask "How would I like to be treated like that?"

Probably your response is just the heat of the moment kindda thing and I get that.

I am a little off guard, very surprised that coming from you! I am truly sorry my response upset you!

Absolutely comes across as a stalker threat type thing. Pretty lame and far from reasonable behavior. If people were not already ignoring your opinions you just cemented that response.

I'm not upset, but someone shouldn't be dealing low-blows regardless of the disagreements you and Krissig have had in the past. I could rub my budget in a lot of people's faces, but that's ignorant and uncalled for.

Everyone in life has a story to tell, and their budget should never be used against them in any way. I come from a lower-class family and worked hard to be making the money I am now, and I'm thankful for being where I am in life. I understand what it is to be broke, so when someone looks down on someone's budget, it strikes a nerve with me.

Maybe you don't understand because money seems to be the revolving factor in your life, enjoy...

One more blanket statement: Not wise jumping to conclusion without understanding the other side.

That is fair enough!

My life is not a secret! If anyone called out I live in Honolulu in disagreement - I don't treat that as a threat - I have no fear!

I am an immigrant refugee from Communist China. Transplant '63 into NYC and every where else. Lived and faced humiliations daily from other ethnicity. My black friend and only best friend(remain faithful to this day), told my wife, back in those days, if I didn't get into a fight, something was wrong that day! I survived and learned bad element I came across was the minority in the whole scheme of life! I could write a book.

A stranger in a strange land. Started with Nothing, gone broke, gone hungry, never gave up, too proud for any social assistance...... Finally ended up in Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. Started out as a apprentice Machinist, elevated to ToolMaker and finally Management! You are correct "Everyone in life has a story to tell". I could write another book on that too! But I am too proud and do believe my story is just another among many!!

Just because a little disagreement. Krissig12 persistence in typing away behind a keyboard all without regards to respect is no less disrespectful than face to face.

My response was directed at - Krissig12!

Anyone jumping into their conclusion without knowing the other side, well......reminded me of the same first hand mass hysteria I saw back in the '60/'70s..... what more can I say!

Aloha!
