Last summer while rockhounding an old mine site out here in Colorado I came across a 6ft jack leg drill bit.
Anyways, I am posting here to see if anybody knows if this would be a worthy steel to use in bladesmithing? I would assume it is a type of tool steel, but it could be 100yrs old for all I know.

It could be anything - literally. 1060, 5160, S7, 1080 ,???????

You could take a slice through it and send the coupon for testing.

The other alternative is to take a piece and forge a basic blade from it. HT as 1080'ish steel and see what happens. Test it well and see how it holds up. Even if te knife gets hard and cuts well, you still won't know what it is or how well the HT went.
