7.62 AR Uppers?

Also, I believe all of the cheap Russian 7.62x39 ammo is .310-.311 in diameter and many, if not all, of the domestically made 7.62 barrels are .308. I may be wrong here. Can anyone confirm this?

6.5 Grendel? Isnt there a .50 too? Beowulf?
You could shoot prarie dogs, deer and bison with the same lower.

Nah, like I said, I'm not stuck on 7.62x39. I'm more set on using the AR platform I already have. If there is a better cartridge than the x39 (like the 300 BLK) for my AR lower, thats what I'll look at. 300 BLK uppers seem out of stock everywhere though.

All for the new BLK rounds... spring for a supressor ;-)

Okay, 7.62x39 uppers......

They will work on a standard 5.56 lower if you use the correct magazine that uses an AR housing.

They obviously won't work with an AK mag.

Rock River designed their 7.62x39 AR and it well......jammed like crazy and they eventually scrapped it and replaced it with the LAR-47.

Armalite has a 7.62x39 AR that works very well, with brass cased ammo, steel is kind of hit or miss.

Rock River's old AR's problem was the magazine, they admit it, they couldn't get it to work right, so they went with something simple and already in place and just redisigned the lower, so they used standard AK mags, that's why the bolt won't hold back on the LAR-47.

When it comes to 7.62x39 in an AR, it's not the odd shape of the bullet, the followers are the same, it's the magazine spring strength. On average, a 7.62x39 weighs over 3 times more than a 5.56. If you use 7.62x39 in an AR mag (say 7 or 8 in a 30 round magazine), it works fine. If you use more than that, it tends to jam and hang up because the spring doesn't have the strength to push up those extra rounds.

Take apart an AR mag designed for 7.62x39, and feel how strong that spring is.

I got a CMMG 300 b/o complete rifle, but i can slap my 5.56 upper on and use the same pmags for either..very handy, and so far i really dig the 300 b/ o round...same mags, same lowers, really a great option to explore if you wanna use your lower.

Or you could just get a cheap ak to plink with. My last one I have just over 400 in and its a sweet shooter. I've spent more on ammo than i did the gun lol.

All of these problems and the the fix was a stronger mag spring? I wish I was the guy that figured that out.

Some of the time I work with a gun smith (when he's not teaching). His old hog gun was a VZ-58 that he bought when they first started importing them.

He loved it, but liked the AR platform, so he bought an Armalite 7.62x39 AR for hogs and he being the guy he is, started messing with it. Dissected the mags all to hell. Started to explain everything to me and he asked what the only variable could be, and it comes down to the magazine spring and he agreed completely and told me about his tests with standard mags.

Last time I heard is that he ordered extra power springs and was going to try it in a PMAG or a standard GI mag.

Both of us are still convinced that the only reason AR mags that hold 7.62x39 are curved like AK mags is so people can tell them apart be just looking at them. Especially if the follower is the same or at least works in each.

If bigger is the issue, then why not the 6.8 SPC? Seems like a decent round from what I've been reading--needs different mags if I'm not mistaken (or just don't load your mags completely full), but can run on the same 223 lower. That's at least my plan for deer in a year or two... 300 BO--from the limited I've read it seems to have been designed for subsonic rounds out of a suppressor (hence the "black out"), although supersonic rounds are successfully used. Seems to have similar (or slightly worse if running subsonic) ballistics to the 30-30 with an effective range limited to about 50-100 yards on deer-sized critters, whereas I THINK the 6.8 can reach out and touch them at much further distances. Hopefully someone much smarter than me on this will chime in and provide some better advice--I am new to the black rifle world myself ;)

6.8 is a hell of a round, biggest draw back I know of (or think I know of) is that it won't work on a 5.56 bolt, unlike 300 blackout.

Still, 6.8 is one hell of a round and a great concept.

going to jump on the 300 BO bandwagon here. I would love to do some hog hunting with that round.

If sig ever releases a 300 BO upper i'll be buying one

I always figured ak mags and ar 7.62x39 mags were curved the way they are was so that the rounds would stack on top of one another properly. 7.62x39 cases are tapered much more than 5.56 cases, this is what drove me to that assumption. Guess that's what I get for assuming.

While I do advocate the 300bo round for the ar, I also really like the 7.62x39 round. I've had zero malfunctions with my Mini 30.

If you wanna shoot a .30 cal bullet from an AR platform use the 300BO if cost per round was the issue buy an AK hell the probably wont be legal to buy a year from now any way. 7.62x39 from on AR sounds great, but it costs more then a new AK for the set up and is (upon my experience) unreliable. I love the 7.62 rd and wanted it in an AR for ergos, mussel mem., and cost but it sucked. I am now on 300BO and I just reload to keep cost down.

Kim and I have a Colt Lightweight Sporter AR in 7.62X39, purchased before the Clinton ban went into effect. It has been totally reliable with the original Colt magazines and with a variety of 20 to 40 round aftermarket magazines. I have long wanted a 5.56 upper for it, but instead have just purchased a Colt 6920 LE.

The7.62X39 in the AR package has significantly more recoil than the 5.56.

For ARs in 308, you have to have a 308 lower as well. The Armalite Ar10NM is a good set up but my favorite is the LMT MWS 308... The British army have bought it in the designation L29 as their new designated marksman rifle. They trials involved HK, FN etc.. its speaks volumes for the quality of the LMT a very well made piece.. it would be my choice.

There's so much to choose from ;)

Frankly, the one reason to go with 7.62x39 is the popularity around the world... for the same reason, going with the AK platform for that round makes sense (spare parts).

If you just want another caliber for your AR, decide what you want to do with it... stealth (300 black out or similar w/suppressor), get between .223 and .308? 6.8 spc. Carry fewer rounds with a pistol rifle combo... .22, 9mm, 5.7. Big power? .458, .460, .500, you can even get .50 BMG uppers (they don't quite fit the mag well :D)

But 7.62x39 is about the one caliber for which, i just wouldn't bother.

From AR-15.com, most of these have been bolted onto the top of an AR-15 lower...

You forgot .223 Wylde and 30 AR ;)

That is another possibility and for some reason I'm not sure why it didn't take off (besides under marketing). The 30 AR is one hell of a round, most of the rifles/uppers built as I recall though were hunting purposes but I'm sure you can find a barrel to make it however you wanted.
