7" pipe for forge?

I currently use a "fire brick" forge and am looking to build something a bit better, not bigger, just better. I came across this 7" pipe that is 14 gauge and just shy of 12" long. Will this be big enough for a hobby knife maker? In other words, what thickness of insulation should I use and would that result in too small a forge with this size pipe? Thanks, Dan.

That will make a fine forge. Use 1" Hi-Z Ins-wool.

I will pass on a tip I tell folks often:
Make the ends from 1" thick Ins-board. You just cut it to fit, make the port holes, and cement in place with some satanite. Stack some fire bricks at the front port to make a work shelf.

I like to make it just a bit bigger, but that size should work. If you want an IFB solution using that size tube, it's possible. If you've got a welder, hold a piece of ceramic tile against the end and weld just a little tack about every 1/2". When you take the tile away, it will leave a nice tooth. You want the tooth just a little wider than the steel tube, but not much. You can then use this as a handheld hole saw to cut your IFB to match the 7" tube. When you're done, you can just grind off the teeth. Make a jig to hold two bricks together, side by side, and rotate back and forth the holesaw. It should only take a couple minutes per cut. You can get a cheap 4" hole saw for a drill to cut the inner chamber.

This method is how I built the first prototype for the Graham.

That's great, thanks a lot, I just got a stick welder too!

Is there a website that you guys use for smaller amounts of insulation materials?

hightemptools.com

They sell all the materials and supplies in small quantities, or in full rolls and buckets. They are the best deal for Ins-board that I have found.
