I believe that Spyderco only sells "seconds" at their factory, once a year, and the tang is marked with a small cut to identify it as a second. Seconds are blemished items with nothing functionally wrong. The previous respondent's problems with Spyderco may be related to a variety of things. For example, the Jot knife has known design problems that include cracking handles, lockup problems, etc. My SMKW Jot was replaced with a Starmate by Spyderco Customer Service.
However, Spyderco is not perfect, my new Starmate developed severe blade play within 2 days and had to be returned for repair. It developed similar, but less severe, problems within about two months which I fixed myself.
It is not uncommon for production knives to have a slight scratch or blemish on the handle...they are production knives. Also in regards to lockblade knives, Spyderco states that a small amount of up and down play is within their design tolerances...however it might not be within a customer's personal tolerances. My G-10 Harpy has play, but my Matriarch and Mouse don't...wish the Harpy didn't have it either.
I have bought knives from SMKW without problems for 10 years.
