701 Stones

No, I missed them too. I think they had some in stock when I got to the site but when I seen the price, I had to think about it for awhile and when I went back to check if they still had some, they were gone. I just couldnt bring myself to pay the $80 for a set when they were production pieces, they sold for less than $35-40 for a set.

Supply & Demand are the bitter rules of any kind of marketing. With the supply of the 701 Profiles shrinking and the demand staying steady and somewhat increasing in the knife community you can only expect people who have them to capitilize on them. But do keep your eyes out for a used set that somebody might put up on Bladeforums or one of the other auction sites. I'm hoping that Spyderco will soon bring them back. Because I still say that the 701 Profiles have more to offer than the Goldenstone simply because you have another grit to use. Not to mention the handiness and portability.

I'm sure glad I stocked up just like I did when they deleted the Galley V unit and I was able to get several of the stones at a decent price. Lord knows I tried over the years to inform many of you all about the great versatility of the 701 Profiles but many waited till it was too late.

But I wouldn't be surprised if Spyderco may even have something better coming down the pipeline. They always seem to have something.

I was wondering this myself if they had any new/improved (or reborn, pssst the 701's) sharpening stones gonna hit the market soon! Does anyone know? :D

I have some user knives on there way so I can practice some freehand sharpening and my sharpening kit will consist of a Norton double sided stone from Home Depot, a Spyderco 701mf profile set and a Spyderco Double stuff. I think I can get sharp knives with this setup. :D

If need be, I may look into the Spyderco Medium, Fine and Ultra Fine benchstones. I might also consider a DMT dia-fold coarse if the Norton doesnt do the job!

I never grabbed up a set, I've seen them here and there but that's about it. I never really thought I'd have a use for them. I've never really purchased any recurves or serrated knifes or anything than a plain edge with your standard amount of belly. That's probably because I don't have the stones to sharpen then when they go dull.

The fact that the Spyderco 701 Profiles are proficient at sharpening recurves, serratted blades and Hawkbills as well as unusual designs like the Dodo>> that alone shouldn't be the primary reason that you would purchase a set of the 701 Profiles. Because even though they are great at those aforementioned sharpening chores they are also a premium sharpening kit for all plain edged blades and many other types of blades. They are also great to take on hunting, fishing, backpacking and many other outdoor ventures wher you need a portable set of sharpening tools. They are an excellent choice for bug out bags and survival gear. You will eventually probably end up owning one of Spyderco's unusual blades or a Hawkbill that is if you're a serious collector/user of premium cutlery and then you will want and need that type of sharpening tool.

I've found so many uses for the 701 Profiles which is why I stocked up on 3 extra sets when I discovered that they were being deleted from the main line up. I do predict that we will eventually see the 701 Profiles return at some point. For 2 reasons I believe that will happen>> #1 reason being is that the Goldenstone which for the most part was meant to replace the 701 Profiles doesn't seem to be getting the fanfare that they anticipated>> #2 reason is that you have a medium grit with the 701 Profiles which the Goldenstone doesn't offer at this point in time.

Also I don't think that the Great Spyder Factory anticipated the amount of people who miss them being in the main line up of sharpening gear thus I think popular demand will eventually get them back again.

I do still believe that if someone wants a set of the 701 Profiles bad enough you can do internet searches and check out dealers all over the nation ( and elsewhere) and I would be willing to bet that a set of the 701 Profiles can still be found if you look hard enough. Also you can constantly check the auction sites and Forums like this one because in these hard times you always have stuff being put up for sale.

The 701MF Profile set can still be found by purchasing each stone individually from internet sites. I did a search and found some sites that had the 701M and some other sites that had the 701F for sale. :D

If they bring the back to production, they should also bring back the 702MF profile set. It should take too much more to produce the half size set! :)

I didn't even think of trying to run the 701 Profile stones down as separate units but I bet you're right about that. I bet there are a lot of both the medium and fine 701 Profile stones out there on many dealer's shelves. Now it might not be the most economical way to get them but it would be a way to still get a set of them. And there is a possibility that Spyderco may still have the leather sleeves that they come in for a price. I know that New Graham and Oso Grande both were good at stocking most of Spyderco's sharpening equipment.

There are probably dozens of dealers on the internet that still have the separate units still in stock. About 2 years ago I broke one of the fine stones in one of my 701 Profile sets and got it replaced at New Graham. It came in it's own leather case/sleeve and I got it in about 8 days from the time I ordered it. I would imagine that Spyderco could supply you with a list of dealers that they supply.

I'm wondering if there are any more of the DUCKFOOT units still out there for sale. I wouldn't mind having another one of those. I really baffles me as to why the Duckfoot got discontinued so quickly. Because everyone I've talked to including myself all loved it and you would think they probably sold quite a few of them. I bet production costs may have played a part in it's being dropped from the main line up???

I picked up a 701m and 701f from two different dealers so I could have a spare set! Each came in a leather case and for both it was roughly about $66 but had to get them just in case they dont return to the line up! :D I just did a google search on each one individually and found the best deal for each and purchased them!

If you are referring to the diamond Duckfoot, I see them all the time on Ebay but I dont know what is a good price for them. I see them around $40, is that a good price?

So can you tell us what is coming out in the near future regarding your sharpening equipment?

Sorry, but I can't at this time. We do have some nice stuff in-the-works, but Eric and I, and R&D have been very busy and the newer sharpeners aren't getting enough development time, so we don't know how long they'll take.

Sorry to hear that because it is nice to see new innovations in sharpening equipment as well as seeing new sprint runs or other model of knives come out! :)

I have my spares.

Your not trying to "rub it in" are you Mr. Glesser :D Oh well I guess I've been guilty of that myself a few times with some of the Galley V stones and other hard to find hardware :D

Speaking of the Galley V stones you by any chance wouldn't be considering any new sharpening devices, stones or other types of hardware that would be oval or elipitcial shaped which would be great for the Dodo, Zulu and other recurve and hard to sharpen blade designs?

Also I do hope you are maybe considering something for the 204 Sharpmaker that would be much more coarse than the stuff we have now?

And Please Sir :) Don't throw away the molds and equipement for making the 701 Profiles because I do believe that was by far one of your best all around hand sharpening tools. We'll look forward to your future sharpening products :)
