710HS as an Every Day Carry?

My main hard use folder is a 710HS. I have an 800HS and an 812 HS that are also users but not to the level the axis gets.

M2 takes a great edge, and holds it well, reasonably abrasion resistant, about like D2 on both counts, maybe a bit tougher but not by much (which is to say it's not a super tough steel like CPM 3V).

When new, I'd only get an occasional spec of rust on the exposed edge/steel.

Now, after much use indoors and out, large portions of the black coating are worn off. I have light rust specs that are kinda down in the grooves... once the black gets worn off, you'll see that the blades are machined multipass and left where you can see/feel the tool marks. The black coating goes on and fills in those tool marks, leaving a smooth finish on the new knife. I just wash blade w/ soap and water, and I guess if I really tried to keep the blade oiled I could dodge some of the rust specs.

Does it bother me? Not really. I've gotten rust specs on the edge, but they sharpen right off. :D The little rust and patina specs on the rest of the knife could be buffed or polished out, but why bother in a hard use knife?

Good steel, but overhyped by many, like many steels. Beats most though, and it's about as hard as a production folder comes, with a target hardness of Rc 60-62 by BM. That counts for about as much as anything.

Huh, guess Spark turned off the ability to use the function (!?!).

Anyway, you can see the machine tool marks, and kinda make out the kind of small rust spots I seem to achieved in the center of the area where the black coating is gone. She ain't purty, she's a user.

Rob,

Long time, no posts!

You know, those machining marks will rub right off with a coarse benchstone and six hours of misplaced effort.

Thom,

Hmmmmmm....perhaps I'll do mine up at a pure 30 degrees too!

If you don't have diamond Sharpmaker rods or some coarse sandpaper to glue over the medium rods, you might not want to do so.

And, as Cheng Dei-I, in "Farewell My Concubine", might have said:

"Any minute spent with a 710HS is a minute spent away from your 941D2CF!"

I getcha'...

I do have a set of diamond sharpmaker rods, so I may do this. I sure am enjoying carrying and gently using the 941D2CF...very much.

Jeff.

Been on the road for 3 of 4 weeks, vacation the other.

Six hours of misplaced effort... my thoughts exactly!

Well, I hope that your vacation was fun.

While such effort is misplaced, that has stopped me from trying to convert the shallow hollow grind in my 806D2 to a flat grind. Something to do while waiting for the plumber... Just make sure to put the knife and hone away before greeting him. :)

Count me among the NE Pa guys. I grew up in Scranton. I now live outside Chicago, but I'll be going back to PA for the holidays. Look forward to doing some serious pheasant hunting along the Delaware river.
