So I have an interesting little project here. Back in the 70s Smith & Wesson was making much more than firearms at their Springfield plant. One of the things they made in house were their survival knives. Back then my father was in their polishing department and got his hands on one of the blades that had been rejected for a small defect in the edge even though final grind would have likely taken care of it. So I now have this blade with a hidden tang design and a threaded post attached that I've inherited and would like to finish up and someday give to my son. I like the idea of putting a generational spin on the design where the blade is clearly 1976 given that its date stamped with the S&W logo. I think it would be kind of neat to add a slightly more modern feel to the grip. I'm a complete novice to all of this but I do have a 6" belt sander and haas cnc mill and lathe at my disposal. I'd love any advice or pointers from you guys.

The original handles were hollow, and the butt cap unscrewed.

I think somewhere on the cap there was a compass as well but I could be wrong. Im not really opposed to loosing that storage and im somewhat torn on if I wanted to make something out of g10 in layers or use wood. I had also thought of water jetting out a piece I could fit over the existing tang and then tig and grind it flat to give it a sort of full tang.
