761 vs Slysz Bowie. Which Do You Like ?

I really like both but definitely prefer Slysz Bowie. Perhaps the best Spyderco with excellent quality and nice crowned blade. Both have very smooth action. The steel on 761 is definitely superior and although the detent is weak it's not dangerous. Overall blade length and the $70 price difference may steer you one way or another.

GearGuy and RamZar , great pics. It's nice to see a direct comparison. Does anyone know if the current production run of 761's is still plagued with weak detent ?

Just to point out the randomness of reports to weak detent. Mine is much stronger than both of my G10 Spyderco Militarys.

^^ I have 3 Benchmades, and they all have weak detent. If I drop them, they'll open. I can open all three of them with a 'reverse spy die-drop,' if that makes any sense. Holding the handle instead of the blade. I can't do that on any other knife I've owned.

The Slysz looks kind of cool, but it's over my $200 budget cap. The 761 has no appeal to me, whatsoever. Doesn't really matter though, frame-locks are deal-breakers. :)

Personally I think the fixation on the detent is a byproduct of ZT's dominance in the market. Flippers do not set the standard for blade detent. LOL lockbacks, power locks and slipjoints don't have a detent.
Anyways my 760 Lum doesn't even feel like it has a detent. Doesn't change its function in any way.

The detent on my 761 is definitely not strong. I can flick it open just holding the handle. However, I agree that it is not something to worry about. It hasn't opened accidentally yet. Personally, I would not (and did not) let the discussion of weak detent be a factor in the buying decision.

If they make a weak detent it would be nice if they made an option of tipup carry...

The first thing I noticed with the 761 when I picked it up was thumb stud on 1 side, to me this was a pretty stupid move on their part. Are they trying to copy a Sebenza? Only difference is on a Sebenza you can buy double lugs if you wish.

I will buy a Slysz Bowie, but will have to pass on the 761 due to tip down carry only.

Completely disagree. Every horrible pocket slashing I've seen on this forum for the last 5 years has been tip up.
One tip down thigh poke repeated ad nauseum.

If you carry tipup with the blade snug against the back of your right pocket it is literally impossible for it to open. So whoever got pocket slashed carrying tipup must of had their knife towards the front of their pocket.

Obviously it's not. I've carried tip down EDC for 27 years. It's the safest carry.
We're off topic so let's drop it.

The 761 looks nice, but the clip reminds me of the one on my 755mpr...so no thanks.
I think the Slysz has everything going for it. I WILL buy one. It comes from the great Taiwan Spydies, which is as good as it gets in fit/finish. And with perfect blade-steel, length and handle width (0.440"), I am just waiting for the right buy...

Same feeling on that clip on the Bm761. When compared to the wire clip it looks just that much worse. I do think I like the blade shape more on it than I do the blade on the Spyderco Slysz, but the clip is kind of a deal breaker for a knife that's that expensive.

Excessively weak detent on any knife would force me to pass on it. I don't recall any of my Benchmades or Spydercos in the past being "too" easy to open. I wonder if it's strictly a 761 thing or a Benchmade thing. But someone just said their 761 has very strong detent so who knows.

My friend Jracingbean just pointed me in the right direction, and I got a NIB Slysz a bit ago.
You'll have a hard time beating a Taiwan-built Spydie.
