77 the next 15

Anyone have any idea what the finished smooth rose camel bone will look like on the 77 Barlows? That's my backup for my blackwood standby spot and I'm curious if I'd like natural stag better. I've seen seen the slab pics on the GEC blog and the darker variants appear to be very nice but I'm wondering if there's any finished work out there with the material. Thanks guys, been lurking for awhile as, like many before me, I sell most of my tacticals and get into trads. This #77 will be my first Barlow or GEC of any kind and I know how fortunate I am to be stepping foot in these waters with such a great blade. And Mike seems like a really great guy to work with and patronize.

Fingers crossed for the African blackwood - I'm nearly certain I'm close to the top of the standby list based on the date it was created - and after seeing the finished pics today, I got my toes crossed too. :)

I am excited about getting my forum knife, and need to contact Mike about getting my barlow. I wish I had the book in front of me, but I'm on lunch break at work. There was a book called the Tall Book of Christmas. If you can find a copy, get it and read it with your kids, it is a great book that I always looked forward to reading at Christmas with my parents and siblings. My grandmother gave my father a copy a long time ago. I was at fault in the book losing it's binding :( :o. I later came across a copy on Barnes and Noble, and got a couple copies for my father to give to us kids later on when we had kids of our own.

Anyway, there was a poem about a young child waiting excitedly for Christmas to begin, and mentioning that he is being as good as he can, but basically he is coming unglued, and the dog, watching him, is getting a little after effect of the excitement. That's how I feel waiting for this knife to come in the mail!

I was carrying my Sheepfoot Charlow when I got my forum knife, and used it to open the package. One of my first thoughts was "Wow, this is a gamechanger. Watch out #15". I don't have a 78, but when I held one at GEC I liked it but thought it was a bit over burly. Definitely has a place, but isn't the perfect happy medium. The #15 is just big enough for a 4 finger grip, but it's always been a squeeze. I didn't really pay it mind till I had the forum knife, but I think the #15 is a little small to be a perfect medium EDC.

I have been carrying and using my forum knife, and I love the size of the #77. It is a great length without being to wide in the hand. I think it would be smart for GEC to really do some comprehensive runs in the #77 frame, and I look forward to seeing how the Tidioute #77's are received.

The #15, while being an excellent knife, is borderline too small in my eyes too. That being said, I still picked up 4 because I like that one arm blade so much and I just had to have a glow in the dark version with a bottle opener.... I missed on the Charlows, but when I saw the #77 Barlow, I had to have 2. I got the Blackwood and abalone. Had to cancel my reservation on the Rose Bone because it looks like some of them are pink and I probably would have gotten one of those.... the #77 is 1/16" shorter than the #78, which is 3 3/4".... a sweet spot for my hand.

I would say to anyone who missed the #77 SFO's and wants a Northfield should get a #78 while they're still around.

Here's another comparison between the 77 and 15 patterns.
The 15 has "peach-seedy" barehead bone to help our esteemed friends' fantasies!!
I have to admit, I agree it would be a great Jackknife!!

I'd like to see the clip blade proportionately wide, like the 15 in our new fantastic #77!!

Yes and yes, Charlie, as that would leave room for the mark side coping secondary! (hint, hint ;))

I don't know if I could cope with that!? :rolleyes:I mean I could cope with it, :eek:but could I . . . . .you know . . . . . . . .:p
:D

Charlie, I think between the Forum knives and those delicious Washington's, you just may need to lie down and rest awhile... :D

I am loving the #77 frame. I really wish I could have gotten in on the Washington Jack, I am keeping my fingers crossed that there is another run of them. And as long as hints are being dropped, walnut on a Washington would trip my trigger, pen or coping secondary.

This was my thoughts exactly, the #77 just fells awesome in the hand. For me it is the perfect EDC size. I'm really looking forward to see what they do with this pattern.

I will when everyone gets their BF knife!!
Won't be long now. . . . . . .

A few days before this post popped up I commented in a thread on Facebook that I hoped the 77 would become the next 15. And now here it is being discussed by my forum brethren. All I can say is that I hope the pattern continues to evolve. So much potential to explore. I love the forum knife and the Washington Jack. As nice as they are (and they're nice!) I'm looking forward to a single blade with wood covers. Micarta would be even better. Nice and slim, nothing fancy. Sometimes I prefer the simplicity of the Tidoute line. I tend to stash away the more fancy ones anyway. ;) ramblings over. Thanks for tuning in.

Like the OP, I find the 77 to be the perfect size for my hand. I like the extra length, but it still disappears in my pocket.

With a SFO of 77 Barlows coming in the new year, I'm hoping we will see some single blade Washington Jacks, and some Yankee Jacks with Micarta and acrylic.

I agree the #77 is the perfect size. Can't wait for the single blade Barlow's on the #77 frame.

I really want the single Wharnecliffe in African Blackwood. I think that it's cooler because it's a wharnecliffe on a barlow. Will be a very useful knife.

The SFO of #77 Barlows next year will offer single blades with stag handle covers. I presumed that this meant natural stag or burnt stag. But the previous run of 77s had a polished stag that looked more like the 3rd cut stag or a second cut stag that had been polished smooth. The big mystery of the 2015 SFO #77s: will there be natural stag, as on the 2014 Blade Forums Knife, or will it be a polished 2nd/3rd cut smooth stag handle?!

I'd love to see a long frame English jack morph out of the Washington jack.

Best regards

Robin

The 77 Barlows are an SFO for a different individual than the 77 Washington Jacks. The Smooth Polished Stag was used on the Washington Jacks, the 77 Medium Barlows first run used Burnt/Natural Stag. I would expect the upcoming run of 77 Medium Barlows to use the same.
