#78 American Jack

Hokay, so am I the only person feeling a little disappointed with the cover options for this knife? Maybe it's the pic's (I'm really hoping so cos this knife should be a winner!) but the pheasant feather acrylic looks a little like pasta! The other options aren't really inspiring either...

Maybe round 2?

When "pheasant feather acrylic" was first posted on a previously upcoming pattern (I forget which, now-- Ben Hogan perhaps?), some of us had visions of the elegant lines sometimes seen in old fountain pens, etc.

Instead, the presenting material then and now is something I call "Blender Pheasant":

I wouldn't have been in for the acrylic option regardless; I'm more disappointed that, best I can tell so far, the Tidioute #78s won't have shields.

Very good P:)

Heinz?

I like the way the covers appear to have been rounded to match the bolsters on the acrylic version. Again, a shame it doesn't look as if this will be the case with other options like the bone for example.

Just waiting to see some more finished handles before I decide. Hoping for some solid black wood!

I'm also disappointed that they are shieldless. I can understand leaving out a shield on a smaller knife but not on this, I hope this is not some corner cutting measure...

Doesn't make me think Pheasant, more like some weird coconut flakes and chocolate confectionary. Pheasants have colours! The actual photos and knives could of course be better, let's hope so.

Do I also see new type of tang stamps???

I agree. There are knives that I like that others dislike intensely, and vice versa. Vive la différence.

Avoidspam asked the question above "...am I the only person...etc", so I was responding to that.

I'm really glad everyone doesn't care for the feather acrylic, gives me more options to choose from. I like it and like the fact that there is no shield on the Tidioute, a true 1920s look in a classic American Jack.

Acrylic is always a divisive material:)

Ebony on the other hand... Looks mighty fine from where I'm sitting!

Im also a bit disappointed that they dont use a shield on that one. If you go shieldless then go bareback with only one bolster imo.

I'd have much preferred shields on this pattern in both lines. The pheasant feather acrylic doesn't appeal to me in the least and I'm shocked they decided to use it as I suspect it was far from a home run on the 65s that first used it. Maybe they're just using up the leftover material. (??) Regardless, it ain't pretty.

I would have much preferred a barehead, but it looks like they're all gonna be endcapped. :(

I'll say! Looks beautiful. This is the first shot I've seen with both blades closed. The Clip nail nick isn't even visible though........not good.

Apparently, the lack of shield on the Tidioute is a cost saving measure and will be reflected in the retail price. The Northfields will have shields with the exception of the Genuine Stag model. :)

The wood looks great. And there's a stockpile of bone in the #47 pictures too.

There are completed knife pictures up now too. But I don't see any spear points. :(

This is true, but more or less indirectly, I think. I believe there is an attempt to make more of a difference between the Tidioute brand and the Northfield brand. An attempt, among other things, to make the Tidioutes more affordable to users, and the Northfields more collectible to Collectors.

In my view, cutting corners on the Tidioute line would be an error. Trying to make them more affordable etc. They are already different enough from Nfield having simpler ornamentation and sometimes actually BETTER shields. This gives aesthetic choice. I certainly wouldn't fancy White Owl Tidioutes without a shield, too austere. This knife is the same, more so as it's quite a big knife.
