30-06 has a lot of positives. The 7mm magnum is one of the most overhyped cartridges ever produced. The difference in ammo cost can be applied to extra practice rounds. There's no substitute for trigger time with your hunting rifle.
I'd like to second the above comment about using good bullets whether you end up with an '06 or 7 mil. I once put several 225 gr. Remington CoreLokts into a 300 lb hog (338 Win Mag) and they disintegrated like little grenades. They are OK for small deer, etc. but for hogs and elk I use Trophy Bonded Bearclaws. They hold together through heavy bone/muscle but the tips expand enough to do massive damage.
