$8 bucks for s steak!!??

Gundy,

Welcome to Texas.

Sorry it rained like crazy today. But, it sounds like you were here yesterday and Sunday was a very nice day - especially the first half.

Tomorrow afternoon might be decent. But, we will probably have higher humidity over the next couple of days from the rain.

Houston has had abnormally cool temperatures this year so far and abnormally nice weather.

It does tend to get warm in Texas. Common day temps are in the upper 90's (F) for most of June, July and August. Because of the high humidity in Houston, unfortunately it doesn't cool off very well in the evenings and can stay in the mid 80's at night in mid-summer :barf:

At least Austin and San Antonio cool off to pleasent in the evenings, night and morning.

It can be nice in Houston, but Austin and San Antonio are nicer IMO with less humidity and cooler nights.
On the other hand, Houston tends to be more green and lush for those who like green and lush. Austin and San Antonio are not as humid and not as green and lush.
Austin is easily my favorite.

* But, don't listen to Tony too much..... He can't even spell Houston:

Go back to Huston in July and let me know how you like it.;)

....., so what does he know.

He lives in "Silly"-Francisco. I have been there. It was cold in August. :barf: ....... And aside from extremely high cost of living, crazy state laws against guns and knives, Dianne Feinstein :barf:  :thumbdn: ........ there are other .... um..... issues out there as well ....

You do have Muir Woods nearby though.

I am curious as to where you bought your steak. I know there are some steaks that can be had for $8.00, but in all fairness that is quite on the low end of the price scale.

Most steaks are probably in the $15 - $25 range with our higher end steak houses having steaks from about $25 - $35 or so.

I don't know what part of town you are on, but the only Bass Pro Shop in Houston that I know of is pretty far West in Katy at Katy Mills Mall. Fine store to visit!

I don't know what good steak houses are out that way. I live way North of Houston and don't make it to Katy much.

But, some good steak House options:

Fleming's
Kirby's
Perry's
Vic & Anthony's
Ruth's Chris

And I had an awesome Black Peppered Steak at Post Oak Grill a few years back if they still have it.

But, I am sure there are a bunch of good places to get a steak aside from the above.

.

You guys never told me food was so damn cheap over here!

I just had the biggest (and nicest) steak I have ever had for $8!

Same thing back home would have cost me $32+.

Houston is nice. Walked into a Bass Pro Shop and spent the day there...

A Tracker for $20k!

I would pay $45k back home....

Thats it...

IM MOVIN HERE:thumbup:

With prices like that I am going to starve while I am there. :-)

Are you from Sydney or Melbourne? If so, do you have any recommendations for places to eat and things to do?

I have been there before and done the touristy things, wondering if there are other non-touristy things you recommend.

Thanks,

Ya still gotta try Fogo de Chao brother....

I'm tellin ya...

Ya shoulda seen Jerry's eyes roll back in his head at that place...

There's a Fogo in Houston, but I think it's a bit more than $8.

ETA: And while you're in town, you might also want to try Pappas Bros. Steakhouse. It's also a bit more than $8, but well worth it.

I worked in the oil and gas industry for about ten years so I had to go there enough times to get e feel for the place.

Because of the Arab population (#4 of U.S. cities) and the oil we called it "Husain" Texas. No wonder I can spell it:foot:

Seconding Pappas Bros. I had an incredible ribeye there, but it was pretty pricey. Welcome to Texas!

No worries Tony. I just had to rib you back for poking fun of anything in Texas. I suppose you understand the Texas ways enough to understand.

In all fairness, I haven't lived in California, but I did visit and it is one of the more beautiful states I have seen. Personally, I prefer the mountain areas.
I wasn't personally (honestly) big on San Francisco. Different strokes. But, I love the Sourdough Bread! and I did like Muir Woods.

Honestly, Houston isn't my first choice in Texas. As I mentioned above, I much prefer Austin. And yes, it can be pretty hot and balmy here in July and August. Personally, I still prefer Houston's heat and humidity to most of the cold weather up north. I can't understand how people can stand 6-8 months of below freezing weather or worse. :barf:

To each there own.

I honestly don't see that many Arab's up in North Houston. But, the hispanic population is growing exponentially and VERY fast. They can NOT be considered a minority........ If you count "All" Hispanics both registered and illegal, they have to be near a majority. I grew up here and don't remember noticing so many areas of non-English speaking groups. Now about 35% of our radio stations are Hispanic.
I went into a Wal-Mart in North Houston near the Beltway on Sunday and I estimated at least 95% of the people in there had to be Hispanic - probably more like 97% - 98%. And every time I heard any of them talking I heard Spanish not English. Then they even made announcements over the intercom in Spanish. And most signage in the store was bi-lingual. I know San Antonio has a very high Hispanic ratio as well.
With the exponential rate of Hispanic propagation, I wonder how long till English is the second language (???????)

Pretty much all of the oil related stuff is in Southeast Houston. Maybe the Arabs are in Southeast Houston (???????). I try not to go Southeast.
I value my health and knowing I am breathing foul air puts me in a bad mood.
...... No I don't smoke either.

Southeast Houston is a entirely different world - ...... in a BAD way.
Pretty much all of the oil refineries are in Baytown and Pasadena and it is an aweful area. You couldn't pay me to live there. Pasadena is deservingly know as "Stinkadena" around Houston - It DOES stink! Chemical pollution STINCH in a BIG way. Baytown would probably be called worse, but I guess nobody has come up with a catchy fitting name to ryhm with Baytown (????).
Most of the year, if you drive over the tall bridges in Southeast Houston, you can see a green cloud floating at tree level as far as you can see. :barf:
It is disgusting.

North Houston, Northwest Houston, West Houston and parts of Southwest Houston are much nicer than Southeast Houston. These areas are all removed from the refinery areas by a good 50-80 miles.

But, I still prefer Austin.

I was in Austin back in November. Had some of the best Mexican food I've ever eaten at Las Manitas. I walked all over town one day. Saw some Lichtenstein at the Austin MOMA. Enjoyed the Texas State Museum of History and did some people watching over on the UT campus. There are some nice coeds in Texas. :D

Hey guys, yes, I meant the Bass boat 'Tracker'. So cheap! I wonder how I would get one back home....

I am in Houston for the week. I am staying out on Katy Freeway and the Bass Pro Shop I went to was at Katy Mall.

We were given the steak cheaper than normal @ $8, usually $14 bucks. I think she liked our accents. People have been real friendly.

As far as eat outs, went to Chile's which was nice. They certainly are big meals and I know not to order the sides next time! We couldnt eat it all.

Stay safe fellas, and Skunk, as far as trying PORK, that would be like eating a cousin man!

I might call Jerry later and organise a post out to my Hotel....:)

SARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR -oooooooooooeeeeeeeeeee !

Just tried to call the shop but no answer! Is it a different time zone over there?

I need some INFI damn it! Cmon Jerry! Answer the damn phone man! Answer the damn phoneeeeeeee!

Couldja grab me a FBMLE & sheath while you're there?

Cheers G. just put it on my tab, you know I'm good for it :)

Restaurant food is a lot cheaper in Texas (and most of the US) than Canada. A good breakfast for four in Calgary is around $50-60, and in Texas, maybe $20 or less.

A mustang for $30k!????

That would cost me $115 to $175 back home...

Oh yeah, thanks to Dan at JRE for sending my my oinkers! Saved me a few bucks on postage...

Jerry, check ya message bank man and call me after 5pm!
