8" Chef's Knife too ambitious for first knife?

you obviously have enough confidence in yourself to handle it, its something you can use. man its art go for it!!!

I don't know about confidence in my abilities just yet, as I haven't made a knife... reground several, but never made my own. What the saying..... "Fake it till you make it"? That's about where I am right now in terms of confidence. ahah
 
My suggestion would be to pick up a piece of 3/32" O-1 and start there. A steak knife would be a great start. After you finish and are satisfied with that, take that learning experience and move up to the chef's knife. Working larger pieces does make it more difficult to keep flat and true, but in time with diligent practice you can make it happen.
 
Sounds like a plan to me. Maybe I'll do a wip thread once I get started so I can get some critiques along the way. :)
