Here's another one I made from a Nicholson file. I'm a Machinist by trade so everyone at the shop knows when there's an old file, I'm the one who gets it! Anyone who's had a knife made from an old file will tell you it's some of the best material to make a blade from. this one measures 7 3/4' long, 3/16" wide, 3 1/2" hollow ground cutting edge, handstitched leather sheath, raspberry dymondwood handle, brass pins. $85 shipped conus, 100% moneyback guarantee minus shipping. Thanx for looking

I tried to send a private message, but I think I screwed it up.

Will you share how you go about annealing and then heat-treating/tempering a file?

Much appreciated.

Michael,

Knife just came in! That was fast! It looks great and is very sharp. Good balance... nice job! One question will the file steel rust? or is it stainless?

Hope it's warming up!
Joel

Well, because a file is made from carbon steel, it will rust if not taken care of. I made my first knife in 1984, from an old file, I still have it, and it has NEVER rusted on me. I take care of it. before you store it just spray some wd-40 on a rag and wipe it down and keep it dry, you should be fine. But even if it does rust a little, you can take some 000 or 0000 fine steel wool and remove the rust (as long as its not too bad and pitted). Knives made from 0-1 & 0-2 tool steel will rust also if not cared for.
Also just for a quick note, "Stainless Steel" does not mean "Never rusting" steel, it just means its much more stain resistant than regular carbon steels.
Joel, thanks for a smooth transaction, hope to work w/ you again in the future
