Hi, this is my first post:) I have owned and used a BM800S AFCK for several years now since its original release and have been very happy with its performance for all manner of tasks to do with military activities and outdoor sports. Having heard that BM had discontinued the 806, I have ordered an 806SD2 (the last one left at my suppliers) Has anybody here owned both knives? Apart from the axis lock are there any other notable differences?
Many Thanks.

Welcome to the forums!

The 806SD2 has D2 steel, which is better for general purpose cutting than ATS-34 and 154CM. It has a 4-way clip position so you can carry it tip-up/tip-down left-handed or right-handed, so it can be enjoyed by more people should you ever do the unconscionable and sell it. It has dual steel liners which make it heavier, but also stronger. It has a chamfered oval opening hole which some find easier to use than the Spyderco-licensed round hole on the earlier AFCK's.

Also, it's not sold at Wal-Mart, so if you got yours for a decent price, no one will give you flack.

The 806 is superior knife. The liner lock on the 800 was among the best liner locks I've seen, but the Axis lock is smoother, more reliable, and more convenient. The use of stainless steel liners instead of titanium liners eliminates that slight handle flex and gives the handle a bit more heft.

My new knife came yesterday and overall Im very pleased, but just a question for anybody that might know; the models displayed on the BM website have mounting holes for the pocket clip front and back where as mine only has the option to carry tip up, L/R? Does this mean I have been sold a knife thats been on the shelf for a bit and isn't the latest version? If so, have any further improvements been made? Its definately an 806SD2:confused:

Mine has 4 sets of holes. You can put the clip L/R tip up or tip down.

You have an older 806D2. Benchmade upgraded the original design with tapped holes for four-way tip up/down L/R carry and phosphor bronze washers. They used to upgrade old versions for the cost of return shipping, but since it has been discontinued I'm not sure if they can still do this. Send them an email and ask.

I just got mine today. It's a 806d2, not the S version. The knife is beefy and very very well made. It's much bigger than I thought, but feels just right in my hand. Flipping the blade is fun, nice clicking sound when you do it right. Excellent product from benchmade.

Your tip up only knife could have the advantage of being lighter. Mine has oval cuts in the liners, while my tip-up/down knife has round holes in the liner (and weighs more).

Thumbs up on the acquisition. Love that 800 series handle. Hope they bring it back in another design.

806s, wpeng4, orthogonal1,
Welcome to Bladeforums!!
I also just picked up a used 806D2 from here(trade forums). I think we all have made an excellent choice. :)

I just bought an 806 today. They only had a combo edge left, so that's what I ended up with. I'm not crazy about combo edges, but the design of the knife is so good that I might be able to overlook it.

The 806SD2 and 806D2 are incredible knives that are just as at home doing landscaping work as they are being used as a self-defense devices.

I traded mine towards a Busse Active Duty.

I own and love a customized 806D2 (I never owned a regular AFCK). I took the black crap off the blade and convexed it. I spent a lot of time "polishing" it with progressively finder grits of sandpaper, and would charactaraze the finish as a satin finish.

Between the D2 and the convexed edge it cuts and holds an edge really well.

I also own two Griptilians. I've used all of the knives for EDC at one time or another and have never had any problems with the AXIS mechanism.

Essayons,

Any pic's of your 806?? I would like to see it.
Thanks!!

Just one question, why did they change the liners from titanium to steel. It makes the knife quite a bit heavier and in my opinion has very little effect in making the knife more rigid. Surely titanium could be considered a more premium material for this type of use?

My guess is... co$t.

Congrats on a great knife! Now, get a 710 and see what you're missing! ;)

Peace.

I will try to post pictures of the 806D2 and red (trainer) handled Griptilian. We just got a digital camera recently.

I'm not completely new to the board. I hung out here a couple years (and email addresses) ago as "dilletante". When I came back, I couldn't remember my password and didn't have the old email account anymore, so I started a new account.
