80CRV2 against D2 steel

Willie71, we have 3 Great Pyrenees and a Newfoundland, I couldn't agree more. I've often said, the more I get to know people, the better I like my dogs. They are all big sweet teddy bears, but my male Pyr is VERY protective, especially of my wife and teenage daughters, as it should be.

I’ve been blessed to have four Great Danes, an Australian Shepard, and a beagle/basset cross in my life. We just have one dane and the beagle/basset currently. You don’t know love until you’ve been loved by a Dane.

Mace is legal to carry in most locales. I've owned pit bulls. Mine were extremely people-friendly, but in a confrontation of knife versus pit bull I'd put the odds about even, or maybe worse. They lead with their heads, which are like bowling balls. Even if you win, the ensuing blood will probably ruin your clothes.

Excuse the off-topic comment, but this thread seems to have become dual topic before me. Oh yeah, and it was almost three years old before I chimed in.

Best of all topics.....

Bowling balls
80crv2
Pitbulls.

All good things!

i was gonna make a tactical knife soon (9 inches overall, 1.5 inch wide blade, 3/16 thick), but im not sure which steel to use, im stuck between using 80CRV2 or D2, which is tougher? i've heard both are tough but i've heard D2 is really rust resistant, so im kinda leaning towards that, but i've only read a little bit about 80CRV2, so i just want some opinions
Winkler knives only uses 80CRV2, he’s said it is the best steel he’s found so far and lauds its toughness.

This thread is from 2014 and has been resurrected in 2018 and 2021. It is a good idea to look at the previous posts and the original posting date before bringing back an old thread. Start a new thread if you have a new question. You can link the old thread.

In recent times we have had many threads about the merits of 80CrV and 80CrV2. Both are excellent steels for carbon steel knives and forge quite well. Being a eutectoid steel it HTs easily, too.
You can find previous threads with the custom search engine in the stickys. Just plug in "80CrV" and you'll get plenty to read.

I'll put in a plug for our resident knife steel metallurgist, Dr. Larrin Thomas. He has a book that is almost a requirement for a modern bladesmith to know steels and how to choose them as well as forge and HT them. The book is Knife Engineering.
His website Knife Steel Nerds is also a fountain of metallurgical knowledge and articles aimed at nothing but knifemaking. You can find the book there.
