#81 Bull Moose Thread

If I am not mistaken the TIW stamp was a reference to the heat treating shop they used. Does that imply that GEC is now heat treating their blades in house?

No, TIW was a reference to the building they occupy, I believe. Their heat treat is done by... Adams Heat Treat? I might be off on the name, but it’s something like that.

Paul, here's the info GEC provided beneath a photo in the "What's Happening?" section of their website.

(They actually edited the caption for that photo; originally it just said "carbon KEEPS cutting" with no other info.)
Awesome, thanks Barrett. My search skills are lacking. Kinda neat to see a new tang stamp. Also thanks Alchemy, and I thought you were just funnin:)
TIW, stood for Titusville Iron Works.

I'll have to hold the real knife to know for sure, but I built a scale model of the knife to check for ergonomics before buying, and what I found was that the blades filled in the hollow in the fingers nicely, combining with the hump in the back to really fill out the grip. For my own hand size and shape, it was very comfy indeed.

Hopefully the real deal feels just the same, because my plans for this knife include rather a lot of wood.
for me it's not so much about comfort, but more like if i'll squeeze the closed blade into the backspring. I tend to do that with full length blades, which is why i prefer smaller secondaries or single blades.

Oh, I think I understand. So you squeeze it into blade rap, basically. Makes sense.

So: no photos due to the abysmal lighting in my home at the moment, but I just got the knife and this was the first thing I tried. Your hands may of course vary, but I couldn't manage to squeeze the blades into contact with any part of the blade well while gripping it. I had to hold it with the well up and push down on the blades, and even then, the tip touched the well before the blade touched the hump in the middle.

I LOVE this knife, but some dudes are gonna hate it. The pulls are smooth and LIGHT. Sub-swiss army by like a lot. I'll say more later with photos.

Ordered my 81 in Osage Orange today! Originally I had hoped for a nice long wharncliffe to go with the clip, but I really like the shape of that spear! When I first had chance to pick up a knife in OO I wasn’t overly impressed with the look of the wood, then I saw how it ages and was too late to grab one so this time I made sure! Funny how tastes and opinions can change, I used to very much prefer half stops, now I like either equally. Thinking I’ll use the spear for food and clip for everything else. Just dug out some leather scraps I picked up years back, gonna make a dangler sheath, made a few little slips before for different knives, but I usually just drop in pocket. I’ll have to see how this one sits without the sheath but I’ll make it while I wait anyway,(it’ll be two weeks before it makes it here) I’ve got a ton of different colours and found some that should somewhat match the OO.
Doesn’t seem like these are getting a lot of attention,I guess everyone’s waiting for the 78’s, or even the 43’s. I’ve already got a NW Madison and my recent Enigma Knives grabs are close enough in size with spear blades to the 78. Don’t mind me, just trying to convince myself not to spend any more $$$, lol!

I am awaiting the Natural micarta and NF jigged bone and from the pics GEC posted today they came out awesome. I love the matte bolsters and Satin blades on the micarta and the jigging on the jigged bone looks phenomenal, very dark with a little white poking out. Cannot wait to get these in hand.

I like the way the Natural Canvas Micarta looks a lot more than I thought I would! I'm afraid the Northfield jigged bone is going to end up being lighter than I had hoped, but I'm still waiting to see the final product on that one before deciding between it and the Tidioute jigged bone.

These do not have half-stops, correct?

After seeing the natural micarta, I just have to have one. This will be a perfect carry knife in blue jeans or dockers...perfect.

No half stops. And Mike wasn't kidding about the silky, flushed pivots. Took me 3 months to get my 74 as clean as this came new.

They are all looking pretty good. I'm going to try and pick just one, and I really thought it was going to be between the Tidioute and Northfield jigged bone options, but now I feel like the Natural Canvas Micarta is pulling into the lead. It's a tough decision. If that Northfield bone had was just a bit darker, I think it would be perfect.
