Good evening everyone! I'm in a great mood tonight, having received a couple of 'new' Old Timer knives. One of those is the 858OT Lumberjack. Not only is the quality excellent and the aesthetics wonderful, it's also a BIG sucker. To give an idea of it's size, here's a comparison scan showing several different Schrade Old Timer stockman sizes.

From top to bottom:
1) 104OT Minuteman (small stockman)
2) 34OT Middleman (medium stockman)
3) 8OT Senior (large stockman)
4) 61OT Slim Premium Stock (large slender stockman)
5) 858OT Lumberjack (jumbo stockman)

One thing that I find interesting, the proportion and shape. Rather than being an oversized 8OT, it's more like a giant 61OT with the proportionally slender body and rounded bolster ends.

Best Wishes and Good Night.

Of all the Schrades in my collection I've never seen a 8580T. Where might a guy find one? I'm forever checking the auction house but come up empty here.

Found mine on eBay. It was listed with a BuyItNow or Best Offer. Wouldn't pay the Buy It Now price, but the seller accepted a lower offer.

Looks like at least five of them have sold within the last 90 days. Do a Completed Items search for 858 knife and 858OT. Can you pick out the one modern import? ;)

I also see that some of these are marked with the Schrade+ tang stamp. Looks like I still have some shopping to do too. ;)

Wow, first time I realized that there is a new production 858OT. The old ones show up on a fairly regular basis and are generally a hot item. More of them seem to be SCHRADE+ than not.

Can someone provide a link to the Taylor 858 ? how easy is it to spot in a pic of knife closed ?
thanks, roland

Yes. beware of auctions where the knife is pictured in the convenient closed position only. In this situation. Check to see what else the seller is peddling, or has peddled. Often times they will be selling all kinds of imported knives.

There is something about the Taylor knives that just jump out at me in the pics. I am not sure if it is different geometry on the blade grind near the tang or what.

And do the Taylor 858s have the swedge on the main blade that the USA models had? If the Taylors lack the swedge, that would be a good way to judge one in the closed position.

My 858 that I bought on a BIN is a great knife. It has the stainless blades (rather have carbon) but has carbon back springs. Big knife.....bigger than the Case large stockmans.

Like this one: no swedge and the clip blade doesn't look a thing like the USA model I own.

They do have "the look".

Stock photos are a dead giveaway too. This one does not show a swedge, and I doubt if the new production knives have one.
