8670 in Damascus.

Whoa guys, do your best work and it will pay off in the end. My problem here is when makers want to do the minimum and charge the maximum.

Your work will be judged against makers with more talent and better equipment.

There are projects that call for a specific look, and executed well, will look amazing. Layer count is one factor amongst many.

Learning as I go.

You only glean so much from reading, or watching. You have to do it, and experience it. I can see the limitations of a log splitter press very obviously now. Take time on prep. That will save multiple hours back and minimize waste. I should have ground the edges cleaner before setting the welds.

Here’s a little update. I got the first billet laddered, ground off the scale, and a quick etch in white vinegar. I have to mix up the ferric chloride still. I have the ingredients, but haven’t made it yet. 264 layers iirc. W2/15n20. I’m sure DevinT will see the obvious mistake in the billet, and chuckle at me.

edit: Flickr changed its format again. I’ll get it sorted ASAP.

I’d pay money for this! Rad

Looks good Warren. I really like W2/15N20, but also like to add a few pieces of 1084 for another color. 8670 isn't worth a crap in Damascus in my experience.

Thanks Don. Appreciate the advice. I was thinking of 8670 and 15n20, for hatchets, or choppers. I’ll do one billet, and see how it contrasts. It’ll probably be a waste of time, but I get curious about strange things.

Yesterday I ordered more 26c3 and cruforgev to make Damascus with. I’m hoping to take a couple weeks this winter and knock out a bunch of billets.

I had a couple inclusions in the second billet I did at the same time as this one. I caught them as I did the final stack. I cut the billet to be able to open up the areas, clean them up, and try to re-weld. The billet seemed good, until I was squaring it up, pressing diagonally, and two areas opened.

The 8670 tries to resist the etch. It turns dark and looks fine with a quick etch, but gets pitted and nasty looking if you go for a deep etch. I tried it a couple times years ago mixed with 1084.
