Hey guys,

I recently saw that AG Russell is offering a Chinese made knife with "stainless Damascus layers on either side of a 8Cr13MoV core" I thought Damascus was made using carbon non-stainless steel. Am I confused here?

Spyderco and others produce VG-10 damascus knives presently through a Moki, Japan factory. All it represents is multiple layers of steel that have been acid etched to highlight the edges.

Almost all the "Damascus" used today is "Pattern Welded Damascus". Layers of stainless and non-stainless steel welded together into a billet. I believe there are a couple of obscure sources for "Wootz Damascus", but they are so rare that the resulting steel is always identified as "Wootz Damascus".

Damascus is a decorative process these days, especially when used to clad a harder core steel. It can be carbon or stainless. Chris Reeve now uses stainless Damascus, for example, but his are blade quality, not simply for looks.
