3 numbered steels are hard enough to remember let alone this cryptic garbage. So anyway what can I compare this steel to? 440a? Better? Worse? Is it a fancy name for stainless garbage?

It's better than 440A, and comparable to AUS-8A. It's a good budget steel: I've used it quite a bit on my Kershaw Nerve and Spyderco Tenacious, and it's performed well.

The spyderco tenacious is 8cr13mov. In my experience with it it sharpens easily and holds a good edge. By good edge I mean I edced it for awhile and it held up fairly well. By the way I'm pretty positive that 8cr13mov isn't fully stainless but it does resist rust well. At least Nutnfancy had a video where at a high altitude it had speckles after an overnight stay.

.8% carbon,13%chromium,mo=molybdenum,v=vanadium=8cr13mov

Hmmm you learn something new everyday...the reason I ask is I received a kershaw volt 2 in this steel as a bonus to make a trade even and I found it hard to believe a half decent steel could be found in a 20$ knife

Depends on the designated use. 440A/B/C are more stainless, and B/C have more carbon too. 8Cr13MoV is closer to Aus8A as Neuron said. Name appears to be Chinese GB standard, but I can't find it in official GB standard, and as far as I can tell, there's only one supplier from China selling it on the market. I asked them, about this steel, couldn't get a clear answer, except the confirmation that 8CrMoV13 isn't in GB standard. Who makes it I was unable to gather, language barrier...

In the past week I've had S30v and VG10 get rust spots just due to the climate (in CT). Stainless doesn't mean it won't rust :grumpy:

I had my Resilience clipped to the inside top of my thermal rubber boot last winter. In one long day the blade started to rust from sweat. No skin contact, just warm body moisture. I just wipe a little mineral oil on it now, no real maintenance. I haven't cut much with it yet.

Yeah I have a fair amount of experience with 8cr13mov - for the money it is actually pretty good. I can get it very sharp with little effort. It may not hold that edge as long as more expensive steels, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another knife with 8cr13mov if the price was right.

I'm with pretty much everybody else. Similar to AUS-8A in all physical properties. While it will lose its edge quicker than VG-10 and S30V, it will certainly be easier to sharpen. As for rust resistance, it's alright. I've had small spots appear on my Spyderco Tenacious and Kershaw Clash from time to time, but it's nothing a little vinegar wipedown can't get rid of. For what you pay, I think you get plenty of quality. If it just doesn't do it for you, shift your focus from the $30 Tenacious to the $30 Kershaw Skyline, which is now in 14C28N. They're built for different tasks, but the latter has better steel (if that's what truly matters to you).

GB? And is it a true stainless?

With the possible exception of H1, all steel rusts, given the proper conditions. There is no "true stainless".
That being said, Sal Glessar said that when they performed salt spray testing on 8Cr12MoV it performed a bit less well than AUS8. Possibly it is not as clean as the Japanese alloy.

I find 8Cr13MoV to hold an edge as well as AUS8. So did Spyderco according to Sal Glessar.
I find 14C28N to hold an edge a bit less well than AUS8 in ide-by-side comparison testing cutting manila rope.

IMO it is easier to put a razpr edge on 14C28.

I would expect better corrosion resistance from 14C28N, but I have no data to support that.

From owning two such blades (srm710 and kershaw half ton) I would submit that they are very easy to sharpen but not quite as edge retentive as a well treated aus8 (think Cold Steel or Boker). That said, a couple of swipes on a stone or strop and they're popping arm hairs.

the early byrds by spydie in this steel were very decent economy performers. personally it can beat aus8 with a good heattreat.---dennis

I've got several Kershaws and CRKTs in 8Cr13MoV. I'd definitely agree that it compares fairly closely to AUS8. A little less corrosion resistance, a little better edge retention (depending on heat treat on the AUS8). As for sharpening, I'll put it this way: if I can get it shaving sharp with a basic Lansky kit, as bad as I am at hand-sharpening, then it sharpens up easily. 8Cr13MoV fits the criteria.

There are much better steels out there, yes, but there are much worse as well. At the price ranges that you'll find most of 8Cr13MoV knives, you're not likely to find much better.
