ok I been making knifes from files so far have made 5. I got one 8in file left its small. having trouble coming up with something different to make out of it.
someone help me out, give me some ideas.
I don't care what it is it will be good practice for when I get some real steel in. probably next week.

Make a dagger with a 3" blade, and two twists, drill two holes in the tang and make a hidden tang handle. In other words, rough out your blade, put the blade in a vise, then heat up the area immediately above the blade and attach your twisting tool ( a flat bar with a slot filed in it so you can twist hot work), do two full twists, then go ahead a prepare you tang. It makes a cool looking blade.

not a lot of room in a file for creativity. It doesn't have to be the full length, either on purpose or if you ruin one like I did. :-/ The dagger idea is a good one.

I think there's a photo of a dager I made from a file a long time ago in my album. Just click on my name and it will take you there. I'd also be happy to post a few pics of my most recent tomorrow.

david that's a nice looking dagger you made. if mine turns out anywhere close to that ill hang it over my mantle. I hope my little propane torch gets hot enough to bend it.

Thanks Crank,

I don't heat treat them as I sell them as letter openers, however, you could heat treat them and they would make a dandy knife. Your propane torch should get it hot enough, just get it to a high red or orange color before twisting. Good luck.

Had some things come up today may be a couple days now before i get to work on it.

spent about 20 min with my little propane torch trying to heat it .
wasn't getting hot enough. I got a slight bend but was scared it would break if I twisted it around twice so gave up. im going to get my real torch tanks filled up soon. it will twist like butter or get cut into one.
