9” Disc Recommendation

I got mine last Saturday... long story short an electrician is coming tomorrow...

A couple years ago I purchased the pheer 1 h.p. and a KMG workrest. Thing is a tank. If you go this route call pheer after your order to make sure the right face plate is shipped on the motor to match the KMG workrest.

Update on my AMK. As per their instructions, it wouldn't run with a GFI outlet being on the same circuit (even though I've been running another 1 hp motor on there for years).
The electrician came and swapped out the outlet, and put in a nicer one over my bench.
Since he was here already, as a nice upgrade, I got 4 x 4' led lights installed. Awesome.
The grinder runs very smoothly and quietly.

I’m very happy with mine I use it with the table so far for flattening scandi grinds. I intend to do handles with it too. The disc runs smoothly no chattering or anything grinding blades on it.

I snagged the KMG table and rest for my disk sander and boy does it not work worth a fuckkkkkk

I used my AMK for the first time tonight to square up some handle material. It was so easy and perfect that it felt like cheating.

It can take a bit of set up and messing around with to get it right, but once you do it works as it should. Almost everything on it is adjustable, so make sure everything is in line and the sockets are set at the correct width so the arms go in and out of them smoothly (if that's one of the issues you're having).

I picked up the KMG Horizontal Shaft Disc Grinder kit from a seller in Canada. I was tired of hand lapping scales and bolsters. This will speed up my process a lot.

Could I have built the same for much cheaper? Yup! But its nice not having to build EVERY tool. Open the box, put it to work.

Im also very happy with the KMG kit and the work rest it came with. Nothing negative to say at this point. If the arms aren't lined up properly, they can jam when moving in and about, but thats a tradeoff for the versatility it provides.

So I have a Grizzly G0864 variable speed 1x30 belt/ 6" disk sander and I did the simplest of mods to it yesterday which makes the disk sander 100x's more useful for me. I cut a 1" piece of the shroud off right at the table. I plan to do the other side and also clean it up a little better too.

So my question is this, should one of these larger pro style disk sanders be near the top of my shop list as I transition from doing slip joint mods to learning and eventually doing slip joint making? If so what would the benefit be to upgrading? I should also mention the disk speed on my Grizzly is from 2000 - 3400 rpm. Thanks!

I just remembered, it really helps to keep one of the lever-locks loose (one that locks the table's angle at the front of the arms) when putting the work rest back on the disc. This lets one of the arms slide side to side which allows it to insert easily into the socket without getting stuck, while the other arm remaining locked keeps the table at its set angle.

I cannot for the life of me figure it out, I still have to build another bench for it - so it's not hard mounted just yet, but it's pissing me off lol. I have a small table that was an old desk that I used to set all my grinder attachments on and my dunk bucket, but I need to build another solid work bench.

I hear ya man, it's never fun having problems with a pricey new piece of equipment.

What specifically is giving you issues on it? Is it the ease (or lack thereof) of sliding the arms in and out, or is it something else?

Got any pics of the part that's giving you trouble?

Edit: did it come to you completely disassembled?

My only caveats which is not specific to slipjoints as I’ve only made one half assed attempt is that you might want the extra 1.5” of work space a 9” disc gives you. Also the full variable speed because thus far I’ve been running my disc between 10-25% on a 1725rpm motor so that’s a lot slower than 2000-3400 rpm. The tilting work table is also useful for jig work or dovetailed items but your grizzly might have that.

Yes, arrived unassembled. I can't get the arms to line up, and it feels like something is wrong maybe with the angles I have set or where I mounted the blocks on the face plate. The arms dont go in, even with almost every unbolted.

Huh. I wonder if it would help at all if you unbolted the sockets from the motor mounting plate and the slid them onto each arm with the work-rest already attached to the arms, and then tried to mount the sockets back onto the face plate with the whole assembly already on/in on them. If you try this, it would probably help to have something at the right height under the table to support it while you tried to bolt the sockets to the face plate, since it's all pretty heavy.

I'm trying to remember how mine came, but I know at least some parts were pre-assembled since I got it second hand. Wish I could help more. If it keeps giving you problems, a picture of the way it looks and how it's set up might help diagnose it a bit better.
