Sorry if this has been talked about already I tried a quick search. I am trying to buy some quench today and Rock Valley Oil which is only about 30 minutes away carries a lot of quenches. He said they have a product called Quench 1070 which is a 9-11 sec quench. I am also waiting on a price which will dictate my continuing search but does this sound like correct quench for 01? I know about the guy in TX but he is over $110 with shipping. Trying to find something local.
Thanks
Chris

You may not "need" a 9-11 an oil that fast for O1, but most people use it. I haven't heard of many people using the old 20 second stuff for a while. I think that realistically, those "medium fast" oils are more like 11-13. From what I have seen, a LOT of these house brand oils are actually repackaged Houghton. The Brownells Tough Quench stuff is for sure. The Houghton has a "sweet spot" right around 150F where you have the fastest quench. At the lower or upper end of the temp range, 120F and 180F IIRC, is where you get your slower speed.

I have always used peanut oil and have had excellent results. 01 gives you almost ten seconds to beat the nose, so its not a stressful quench. That oil will likely work. Two benefits of peanut oil are that the shop smells like french fries, and not a chemical dump after quench, and that you can fry a turkey, then write off the oil after you're done. Woot!

Well my search continues. I never heard back from that company and the other one will only sell me 55 gallon drums. I almost thought about getting a price and repackaging it myself in 5 gl buckets, but I'd probably have to sit on it for a while. Right now I am using canola, and it seems to work Ok. Just trying to take some of the guess work out of the game, and I figured an industrialized quench would do that. I heard mineral oils can be all over the board and I would prefer to have a solid baseline with a known quench in case I am forced to buy a different mineral based oil.

>Andy, without divulging any trade secrets, did you ever do any comparison testing using peanut oil and a industrial quench?

Thanks Chris

Check McMaster-Carr for smaller quantities of oil. Their 11 and 28 second oils both work well with O1. I prefer the slower oil on O1 myself.

No. I never did any comparison testing. My mentors were using peanut oil when I started, and I've always had the knives RC out at the correct level with peanut oil. If it aint broke...

Thanks, much appreciated, unfortunately I already ordered quench for Mcmaster earlier. I was gonna try and nab one of your knives today, unfortunately I left my desk for an hour and when I got back they werealready taken. Oh well, I'll check your other suppliers.
Thanks Chris

I have a 5 gallon jug of the McMaster Carr and have had the Brownells/Houghton stuff before and the McMaster-Carr is a different product and might strike you as a bit strange looking compared to say Parks 50. It seems to work well.

We use Mcmaster carr 11 second oil on O1 often but I have just as good results from heated canola..O1 has a good while to get under the nose..Use the 11 second stuff on 52100 also..I broke a nice 52100 blade in parks once..
