I recently added a 9" disc grinder to the shop and really like it. I'm thinking I want to try some type of backing on the disc when running higher grit paper. Maybe a 1/16" neoprene rubber. Any suggestions on what works well as far as a material and thickness for a backing?

I have a piece of .030 thick silicone rubber I use but leather works too.

I use cork. You can get a 10"x26"x1/16" sheet at Autozone for $6. It's intended application is for creating custom gaskets but it works well for our purposes. To my understanding most makers use either cork or rubber.

I backed one of my discs with 1/16th cork gasket material and it works well. Larry

Alright, the 1/16" cork works great and Autozone is right up the road, so thanks for the suggestions and thanks Adam for the source!

The cork sounds great. I got some 50 durometer rubber from McMaster-Carr that works nice for grits above 320.

K and G has rubber backers cut to size. I bought 2 of them a while ago and finally just started using them.
