Greetings,
I have a beveled 9" Disk and wondering if I should cover it with a cork backing or not. What are the + and - of adding a cork backing?

Thoughts?

Dennis

I personally recommend facing it with 1/16" thick "Felpro" cork gasket material you can get from NAPA.

Pros: -No chatter like you sometimes get without a backing.
-If you use 9x11 sheets, they will last MUCH longer with the backing
-Smoother/finer finishes than with the same grit paper and no backing

Cons: -Its something that will require replacement from time to time.
-Depending on what you use to attach it, it can be a real job to get the old cork off for replacing.

Here's what I recommend: Clean the disc well with acetone or brake cleaner. Use something good like 3M spray adhesive to attach the cork to the disc. I just glued on a rectangular piece, then used a razor knife to trim it to match the disc.
For gluing the paper to the disc, I use the elcheapo Duro brand spray glue you can get a Walmart. One coat on the cork will usually last me 2-3 days of taking paper on and off. Its just tacky enough that you can press a new sheet of paper on, and trim the sheet with a razor knife, then when you need a new sheet or grit, you can peel the old one off fairly easy and apply the new sheet, trim, and go.
I've been doing the cork backing on mine since last fall, and have had to change the cork once...but that was because I got careless and caught the edge of a blade...it dug into the cork and ripped a chunk out.
When I purchased the material at NAPA, it came in a roll, which has enough material for 3-4 applications....and it was only about $9.

Ed , when the time comes and there is a need to clean the excess build up of glue and stuff , can you clean the cork or do you need to replace it ? I've been using 1/8" closed cell neoprene and have found over time , cleaning it is destroying it .

Ed , great info , thanks for the tip !

Have you compared using the cork vs the rubber pad that some places sell for the 9" disc by any chance ?

hmm and there is a NAPA 3 blocks away...

Far and away the best I've used is "printers blanket", heavy cloth backed rubber
sheet with just enough give. If you need to take it off it dosen't tear or distort
cause of the heavy cloth backing. Printing outfits throw away a fair amount of
them.
Ken.

Do the softerbackings still allow things to be flat? It seems to me it would cause lleading edges to become rounded? Or do you use the softer backed disc for something else.

Hi,
I just got the 3/32" Napa cork gasket material. Will it work or should I return it and exchange it for 1/16TH"??
Thanks for the help.
Fred

I use a product called Remount made by 3M, it's a repositionable adhesive. One application is good for about 20 or so sheets. Any repositional adhesive you can get at a craft store will work. I don't use a backing pad in grits 60 - 320 and the flats are extremely flat. When I go higher 400 and up I use the rubber pad that came with the disk from K n G. If you don't the thinner paper has a tendency to tear. I use the repositional adhesive on the pad as well, easy on easy off.

My google-fu may be weak today, but it shows up all over the place in online UK stores... not so much in the US.

I'd be interested in trying it. I have had AWESOME success with the 3M feathering disc adhesive from Tracy (wipe on...not the spray) for doing just like Mike mentioned, taking the discs on and off without tearing and such.

I use Franklin Disc adhesive found here, http://www.industrialabrasives.com/...c7884a7a8a68000c00048d827ff9&keyword=franklin

I have used the 3M feathering disc and a NAPA brand and I like the franklin much better. It is not as nasty chemically as the 3M but cleans up with adhesive solvent just like the 3M. It goes on like white glue then dries clear and remains tacky. I get 15-20 changes and it works on plastic, steel and rubber. I have not tried it on cork but it should work with it also. A big plus is that it is half the cost of 3M. It lasts a really long time too. I bought 3 bottles about 4 years ago. I just opened my second bottle. Give it a try I think you will be happy.

I do , have it mounted to a 1 1/2 HP 1725rpm motor (reversible )

John, what is your review of the disk? Is it machined out of one piece of steel or is the center welded on. Is it balanced? Thoughts?

Dennis

I cant recall if it was welded or one piece I can check later in the shop, very well balanced , runs very true. I love it and hate that I waited so long to get one. I used it for 6 months before realizing the motor was able to be reversed. Since changing that I have used it even more.

Hello everyone, Does this cork backing grind things flat or is there any rolling over of edges? This sounds like a great idea im courious to give it a try. I love to use my disk for flatening and polishing the flats of blades. Im also kicking around the idea of doing flat grinds on it.
