908 Striker II vs. 580-2 Barrage

I normally carry traditional slip joints in the 3.75 - 4" (closed length) range, which I much prefer, but I am in the market for a new, slightly larger, EDC that could be rapidly called upon for defensive purposes, if necessary, as well as handle most EDC tasks - in the $~150.00 range. I have a plethora of nice knives to choose from, including a Small Sebenza, but I don't carry it much due to it's relatively high cost - but it sure is a beaut. I also have a Benchmade Dark Star, which is a cool knife, but it has absolutely terrible ergonomics and is difficult to hold comfortably for serious tasks, which require a certain amount of force. Please help me decide between the 908 Stryker II or the 580-2 Barrage (I'm leaning towards the Stryker II). I realize the Barrage has superior S30V steel, but at the expense of brittleness? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for the advice.

The 908 is a great blade. I myself don't care for assisted openers so the Barrage doesn't appeal to me. You can open and close an axis lock so fast that assisted openers aren't needed.

Agreed. I didn't realize the Barrage was an assisted opener.

Would you say that the 908 is ergonomic - fits in the hand comfortably?

I have the older Strykers and they are some of my favorites. The 908 appears to be identical in size and shape.
I also have a 581 Barrage.

The Barrage has a fatter grip, somewhat sculpted, so it is probably more comfortable. I haven't handles the 580 Barrage but its blade doesn't seem to be as pointed as the 908 blade. I like the more pointed blade for my own use.

I agree with your assessment. I was considering the 580 due to the more sculpted grip, but like you, I prefer the shape of the 980's blade. I want to avoid the bad ergonomics of the Darkstar - the 980 appears to have a better grip shape (and the 580, better still) but I do not particularly want an automatic or assisted opener. I also like the increased grip of the 980. So so far, I like the 980 best, but I'll wait for additional feedback before ordering. Thanks.

I have a 908 drop point Stryker in Carbon Fiber and M4 steel. It is probably my favorite Benchmade next to my Bedlam. If you don't mind a little bit of blade play, loosening the pivot screw will make the blade drop right out when the axis lock is engaged.

I'm considering the ZT 0900 or possibly the ZT 0560 at the moment...

Did I understand correctly that you are looking for an EDC with a blade length between 3.75 and 4 inches? The 908/909 Strykers are all less than 3.75" in blade length. They're just a hair over 3.5".

I'm a big fan of the Axis Stryker models. The full size models just seem to hit all the right spots for me and the Mini Axis Stryker is a great daily carry. The handle is comfortable--thin in cross section but wide enough in profile to fit the hand. This makes them easy to carry as well as use. I also like the blade steel--154CM is just plain good. It holds an edge well and it doesn't require a lot of work to maintain or re-sharpen the edge. The Axis lock...what's there to say? It makes for some of the smoothest opening knives around. I like how the Strykers sort of make a nice metallic "snick" when the blade pops open. The only negative comments I have about the Strykers concern the clip. It has some very minor but still detectible side-to-side flex that annoys me. The Mini model also rides too deep in my pocket due to the clip placement.

ZT makes some excellent knives. But many of them are too large, too heavy and often have a design feature or two I really dislike. I have a 0550 that is one of the smoothest knives I've ever owned but I don't carry it because it's too wide and heavy and the clip placement over the lock bar makes it a pain to open. My 0200 is just about as strong as you can make a folding knife but it's an absolute monster in the pocket due to size and weight. Other models often have Speed Safe assisted opening and I'm not a fan of assisted opening. But if you want a big and heavy EDC knife, ZT will likely fill the bill.

My 3.75 - 4" comment referred to overall closed length. Most of my slip joints have blades in the 2.5 - 3" range. I am looking for an EDC that is stout and fast to deploy - for use as both an every day utility knife and as a defensive knife, should the need arise, with blade length between 3.5" - a bit under 4". I'm glad you mentioned the ZT 0550, as I have been considering both the ZT 0562 and the 0550. I think the ZT 0909 and the 0560 are probably too large (for me) for EDC. After studying the photos, I can definitely see that the clip position on the 0550 might cause issues, which leaves me with the 0562, which is a bit lighter that than the 0550. When I first became aware of the ZT line, the protruding flipper turned me off, but I now can see the benefit of such a system - more positive than thumb studs and considerably faster than a slip joint. Yes, I realize ZT makes a Hoss of a knife, but the 0562 might be what I'm looking for - unfortunately, I can not view/handle one locally.

Also, today I did have the opportunity to handle some of the new Benchmade models. The following are a few of the models I briefly handled (my young daughter was with me and the place was crowded) and my impressions:

Griptillian Pardue (full size and Mini): very nice, nice blade and easy deployment, but they lacked steel/titanium liners , which I like.
Foray 698: very nice all around, but a bit smallish and it has a slight recurve, which rules it out for me
580-2 Barrage: very cool, I like it, but the assisted opening is not necessarily what I'm looking for
Crooked River G-10: very nice, but a bit unwieldy to open and I'm not sure I like the style
Several HK models in the Patrol family, which were nice, but not what I'm looking for.
Unfortunately, they did not have a Stryker II which, based upon reviews and photos, I do like quite a bit.

Honestly, Benchmade has some very nice knives and I'm sure I'd be happy with most any of them. This can be a real problem for an individual like me with limited funds and the ability to make only one purchase for the next 6 mo. or so. I also know that I can research this until I'm blue in the face and still have a level of uncertainty since I don't have a way to handle any of the ZT models.

I have a 908-1501...CF & M4 and it is an absolute winner!! Tough as nails, smooth as butter on glass with a nice hefty blade! There is nothing I don't like about it!! One of my favorites!!
I also have a ZT 452 CF and a 562 CF. Both most excellent knives!
If I was in your shoes I might focus on the 452 or a 710-1401. Both have almost 4" blades that are slimmer than the others you're looking at.
But, believe me.......you can't go wrong with any of them!! Choose the one that makes your belly feel funny!!!
Couple pics for you.
I threw in a pic of the 665 also........just because!!!
Good luck!!

Yep. I just bought a new iMac 5K computer and I feel for your time doing research. After a while everything begins to look alike and the product features get blurred. The good thing is it's just a knife. They all cut stuff. You just pick the size and style you can live with and choose from manufacturers with good reputations for quality and customer relations.

Thanks for the reply & photos, palonej. The 710-1401 is cool but has a recurved blade which is a deal-breaker for me. The 452 doesn't have s.s. or titanium liners, which I desire, but the 665 is cool; however, if I'm gonna' get an assisted opener, I think I like the Barrage-2 better. I also like the ZT 0562 & the 908.

So as it stands now here is my list - in descending order:

1) Benchmade 908 Stryker II - probably a tie w/ the ZT 0562, but the Benchmade is a bit sleeker.
2) ZT 0562
3) Benchmade Barrage 580-2 - this is the only knife of the 3 I have handled & I like the feel, balance & ergonomics - if I
decide to go the assisted opening route, this is likely my choice. My reason for not particularly wanting an assisted
opener is that it's an additional point of failure, but this is a very cool knife.

Joe, I'm sure the 710-1401 is a great knife, but recurves are flat out, I strongly dislike them. I sure do like your Stryker II 908 and that ZT 0562. Which would you say is more comfortable to use/carry/deploy - pros/cons?

That Barrage 580-2 sure is an awesome blade though... I'm sure I will eventually end up getting them all. Thanks.

Excellent choice my friend!!! One other thing is that Benchmade has EXCELLENT Customer Support.......just excellent!!
Many pics when you get it!
My Barrage is assisted also and it is bad ass!!
Good luck and enjoy!!!

Sorry I read your reply too quickly!
908.....M4 steel, amazing!! Action is so smooth it's scary!! Locks up stupid tight!! Little thick behind the edge, but it CUTS!!! Axis lock makes it fun to flick!!

562 cf....amazing action and flips great!!!!! Blade shape is gorgeous!! Also a little thick behind the edge, but the bitch CUTS!!! I am able to open mine with the studs or the flipper. Sexy looking knife!!!

Pretty sure they both weigh about the same, both companies have great support.
Gun to my head I think I'm going with the 562 CF, mostly for the cool factor! But I will NEVER sell either one!!
If you go for the ZT, check out Scott at usamadeblade!! You can get it anodized and Scott or Kevin will do whatever it takes to make you happy!! They impressed the snot out of me!!!!

Hope my scatter brained reply helped!! If not, ask away!!

I think I agree with your 0562 assessment. The Stryker II 980, w/ un-coated blade has 154CM steel, and while I would like the M4 steel, coated blades are not for me. The Barrage 580-2 has CPM S30V, which is also a great option. The ZT 0562 G-10 has ELMAX, while the 0562CF has CTS-204P, which which I am relatively unfamiliar, but by all accounts it's also a superior steel. To me, I would not base my choice solely on the type of steel used in these particular knives, as all are great choices - all superior steels - with the nod probably going to the ZT 0562 with either ELMAX or CTS-204P, or the Barrage 580-2 w/ CPM-S30V. Right now, I've got my eye on a bronze anodized ELMAX 0562, which I could customize w/ a cool sculpted micarta or G-10 scale and bronze hardware... We shall see. Thanks.
