Yeah -- I've sent email to the administrators so there's no need for everybody to. Sheesh....

I am not a regular at the tac forums but, being human, I had to look.
Uncle Bill......no criticism meant, but did you have to give the errant poster any more publicity than he deserved ?
Just a thought.

Brian:

Point well taken. I just recalled some discussion earlier about how hard it is for moderators to police a forum this large and I tried to help. Please accept my apologies if I didn't.

Geez, Uncle Bill......no need to apologize

I was just trying to highlight the fact that these flamers survive on attention .

3 cheers for uncle bill however he got it done. We don't need to give the "Jack Booted Thugs" an excuse to go after knives the way they are after guns.

Looks like some people are just out to do no good. I deleted the entire thread as my #1 rule was not only broken but taken to a new vicous level.

I think a better plan in cases like this is to EMail Spark, Mike plus the moderator(s) of the forum in question. Example: if this happens in Community, EMail both me and Vampire Gerbil in addition to Spark and Mike.

Suggestion: in case of emergencies, I think we might benefit from a "backup ubermoderator" with edit access to the whole board? I'd nominate James Mattis as someone I'd trust with that much power in a heartbeat.

I think EMail alerts are a better plan than posting a message here to the main forum, in the future. Not that Bill didn't have good intensions or screwed up in any way...

Your call, of course....but,was the whole thread corrupted by the one post ?
Like: did it need to be totally deleted.
And, is the perp gone forever ?

The thread that was deleted in its entirety was the one the troll started, with his personal attack and a couple of brief replies that would have been left hanging pointlessly if the whole thread had been zapped. I wrote one of them.... I doubt if anybody else who replied to that thread will object to having their posts deleted either; they were just very brief messages like, "Go away, you dork." My message only told everybody not to email Mike & Spark because I'd done it already, so they wouldn't get mailbombed -- not deathless literature that's now lost forever....

Uncle Bill, you did good. Email would have been better but I expect you were excited. I was too when I saw it.

If the software allows it, why not give more people global powers? It'd be one thing to create more moderators for a forum, not necessarily a good idea, but giving someone access and just authorizing him to act when it's a case like this that calls for immediate action -- that's a clear enough responsibility that it's not likely to lead to any second-guessing; if there's any doubt he'll leave it for the moderators of that forum to decide next time they come online and get their mail.

The troll might be gone forever; he didn't get even one of the kind of flames he was looking for, so he might not even try again with a different identity. Everybody showed great restraint in not arguing with the dork; we all deserve a quick pat on our widdle heads.

Maybe a few moderators on the other side of the world that are online when most of US members are asleep or offline.

Can't be giving regular members the ability to moderate. What happens when a troll gets ahold of those abilities?

I'm reluctant to do that for a few reasons.

1. Nothing goes on here that one of the moderators doesn't have access to within 12 hours.

2. Nothing extremely earthshaking happens here that needs an immediate response (except for attacks).

3. The only people who can edit and delete posts in any forum (assigned to them or not) are the Admins. In our case, that's Mike and myself.

4. Administrators have total control over the board. We can create / edit forums and styles, prune entire forums, delete members, set global variables, etc. It's not a matter of not trusting someone with the power, but a matter of reducing the likelihood of us having a security problem by having fewer people as Administrators.

5. Since the software doesn't have the capability of a "SuperModerator" where a person has the edit/ delete power of a moderator, but doesn't have total control like an Admin, I'm extremely reluctant to grant admin priviledges to anyone who doesn't need them.

6. We've already seen forums deleted when someone guesses a Moderator's or Admin's password. How many of you have something extremely simple for your password, somethign easy to guess or figure out?

So, right now I just don't see the need for it. Nothing goes on here that's can't wait to be looked at, right? Even the "911 call" today could have waited till whenever. More attention was attracted to it by posting in the General forum than it was getting by just sitting there.

In summation, quite frankly, nothing really warrants us having more admins, and since we don't have a "SuperModerator" option, it's my earnest opinion that we'll get by just fine with what we have right now. If a problem comes up, email us and we'll hop on in there.
