940-Series Usage

Just picked up my first 940 a couple days ago...had wanted to go with the 940-1 but found this in a local shop and couldn't resist. I can't put that damn thing down...it's better than I expected.

I would say the 940 is a light to moderate use EDC folder, and an excellent one at that. I also think its capable of about 95% of the tasks a majority of owners would ask from it. In fact, the only reason why I wouldn't use the phrase "Hard Use" is because I don't want anyone going out with one and being upset that they can't cut through a car door, or a cinder block or chop down a mature Oak tree with a 3.5" folding blade, even one in the caliber of the 940.

Pros:
-Axis Lock...it simply doesn't get much better for ease of use and ambi-friendly ergos.
-Very lightweight for its size, especially the -1.
-Superb blade to handle ratio.
-High quality materials and very satisfying fit and finish for the two samples I have owned (both a standard, and currently a -1)
-Superb action and 'flickability' along with zero blade play on my two.
-Slim in-pocket carry. I love Spydercos but none, with the exception of maybe the Mantra 2, carry as slimly.

Cons, (depending/subjective):
-(Obviously, since I purchased two, it doesn't bother me much, but...) Not the greatest value for dollar.
-My standard model was great and my -1 is perfect, but I've read and seen numerous photos and stories poor fit and finish on 940s...seems like it comes and goes.

Side note: I really prefer the feel of the standard model, green anodized aluminum handle. The CF of the -1 isn't overly slick IMO, but the added texture of the aluminum is just spot on. Perhaps I'm also growing tired of the CF look.. The extra weight of the aluminum also makes the closing action more satisfying...that lower pitched clunk.

The standard S30V steel is easy to maintain in my experience; I've re-sharpened and put beautiful edges on it with my EP. I was initially a bit anxious when I purchased the S90V, -1 due to internet stories of difficult sharpening experiences...hasn't been the case at all. I've gotten beautiful, wonderfully sharp edges on my -1 just from my Sharpmaker alone. If you're even half decent at sharpening, not need to fret.

A classic, worth trying out for sure!!!:D

Nice description of both. Was looking into one of those two for more than a month. While I wish I got a satin finish instead the black blade, I am happy I went with the original. So far spot on in attributes.

Also interesting to hear about the s90 steel. I've read all the same prior. Good knowledge for the future.

Thanks

If the level of abuse it will endure is a concern check out some videos on YouTube. A guy by the name of wranglerstar has a couple videos featuring a truly beat up 940 and he swears by its quality and durability.
Mine personally has never been used hard, but with benchmades warranty and the customer service I've experienced from them, I wouldn't feel too bad if I had to thump on it to get a job done.
