940/users or safe queens

Mine gets no special treatment, I just try to grab a different one from the pile each day. Only have 6 total, so none of them collect dust.

The finish on mine has been way more durable than I anticipated, which is cool. I almost wish it looked a bit more 'used' though, lol. In due time I suppose.
Always nice to see pics of well used knives. It's much nicer IMO to have 5 or 6 good knives you use the crap out of rather than 20 that get little use.

I use Ballistol. It stinks to high heaven but sure gets the blades clean!
I think I'm the only person I know that actually likes the smell of Ballistol. I've always associated it with cleaning firearms which is usually a calming experience after a fun day of shooting. Great all purpose lubricant.

For tape on blades the BreakFree Powder Blast dissolves it really quick. Alcohol works too, just not as fast for me.

I know several people who like the smell of Ballistol...I just never have for whatever reason. I use it on my firearms too. I prefer the smell of Hoppe's 9, but I think Ballistol is a better cleaner and lubricant. I love the coating it leaves behind.

I don't understand the idea behind a 940 as a safe queen. It isn't going to increase in value. It is a classic knife because it is a fantastic EDC blade and a great user. It is not a collector's knife. Now, a special/rare edition of the 940 (like a gold class, 940-1, first-run, dealer exclusive etc...) I can see wanting to keep pristine; whether as a collector's piece or as a knife you own to enjoy but not to use (with no expectation of it gaining value). But a standard 940 is just not a safe queen, even if kept in a safe. A 940 in a safe (or drawer) is a neglected user/EDC, not a safe queen.

Might as well call a Griptilian a safe queen. While the 940 may cost more (and is a "nicer" knife), it is still a user EDC knife like the Griptilian. Pretending it is a collector knife doesn't make it a safe queen, it just makes it a user that wrongly doesn't get used.

I actually enjoy the smell of Ballistol. I use it on all of my guns and knives. I've even used it on a pair of boots! It's good stuff, and one of the few cleaners I'd ever use in the house.

I think the OP was using a much more "broad" definition for safe queen. From reading his post, I assumed he meant that the knife would be used some but not carried every day. But I could be wrong....

I personally don't mind having knives that are used more "lightly" than others. Not because I want them to retain value, but because I want them to look nice. Kind of like a pair of dress shoes. You want them to look nice when you do wear them, so you don't go stomping around in the mud like you would your everyday boots.

Now in my previous post I mentioned that for me the 940 wasn't quite a user, but wasn't pristine either. In my opinion (but surely not everyone's), the 940 is on that border between too nice/expensive to beat up but not fancy/expensive enough to keep as a "collector". I see people's beat up 940's, and I respect that, but it's just not how I want to use the knife.

Yep I've never really used Ballistol as a cleaner. I usually go with Hoppe's, Gun Scrubber, or Powder Blast then lube everything with Ballistol. Use it all around the house too. And if anyone hates the smell of Hoppe's, well then they're just un-American. ;)

I got mine and was thinking the same thing as you. However, after a while of babying it, using it and scratching it somehow was inevitable. Now a days, I carry it pretty often as a part of my rotation... I must admit that I still do baby it a little bit.
My only gripe with it is that the purple anodizing on the titanium backspacer has worn off :(

I was the OP. Maybe safe queen wasn't really the right term I was looking for. I just meant, that since it was the most expensive knife that I have ever bought should I use it? While I have been using it, part of me just felt like maybe I shouldn't since I spent so much on it. It has definitely been getting used!

If I had a custom knife maybe the 'should I use it' would have more gravity. These/your and my Benchmades are factory production knives. Yes they cost more than some, but less than others. The question is, do these increase in value? Well, when they are discontinued they might go for more...but the 940 series have been in the offerings for literally years. That means there's a lot of them out there. So If you really like the knife, use it in good health and maybe when you can get another for backup. Until the knife is discontinued, and maybe even longer, many parts, including blades can be had for a minimal price from the factory - there's nothing to lose.

After buying enough limited production and old-school models that I look at, something changed a couple of years ago when I realized I got more enjoyment from using the knives. So what I've been doing is buying users; of the very models I can't bear to put to task. It's not a bad solution, and for that matter it makes me not think twice about putting that thing in my pocket.

Carried mine today - Cut some weed whip string, dug mud out of the edger a few times and cut a few low-hanging branches with it. I quit my job and started cutting grass again, lol. Coming home physically exhausted vs mentally is a welcomed change. :D

Awesome! The more you use it, the more you'll want to put it into the rotation. If I'm in khakis or slacks I've usually got either my 940 or 940-1 on me. And odds are if I'm dressed like that I'm not going to be doing any serious cutting anyway so it kinda works out.

By all means use it...I use mine regularly and it's still one of my favorite blades of all time. Once you start using it, you will see what I mean. Congrats on the purchase!

This old 940 has been used a few times by my dad and now me after he passed. Pretty unique one I guess, but too nice not to use in my opinion

I can't lie though, if this were still in like new condition I might buy a green one to beat up. Kind of glad he beat it up for me in advance.

The only problem I can think of not to hard use my 940-1 is that I'm not good at sharpening and would most likely mess up the S90 blade if it dull... so just recreation and some light utility task for mine...

You can get it sharpened locally by a reputable service or send it to one of the great members here on the forum once in a while, cost is really minimal and just touch up with hones and leather belts if you are really really bad at sharpening

Kudos to you, my take on that is use it if you are good with keeping it around you and not loose it, it has more sentimental value than anything, the knife has lifetime warranty and a knife is ment to be used, give it its purpose of existence and then pass it on to your kids; it has more than plenty blade stock to last 5 lifetimes

Yeah, I have a ton of his knives, from randalls to bemchmades and use all of them except one of the randalls. He was the type that wasn't going to have a knife he didn't use, so I try to do the same. I sent a cqc of his back to bemchmade with a broken spacer and they did a great job fixing it and sharpening it. Great customer service.

My 940 and 940-1 are my most carried folders. Just down right perfect to ME. if I had to choose id keep the 940.
