940 vs 940-1

Old thread but I'm in the same boat, I was set on the 940-1 but for some reason I really like the look of the green aluminum handles, but as stated in here it does look like it would stain a lot.

Does everyone still prefer the 940-1 now that it's 8 years later?

I still think I am going to grab the 940-1 as well as the 535-4 bugout this weekend, thought about the 535-3 as I like the blue accents with the carbon fiber, I wish the 940-1 at least came with a blue thumb stud. But I do prefer the aluminum bugout with the m390

I prefer the original aluminum and am in the market for another. Few EDC knives look better when beat up a little IMO.

One scratch on the alum scales and see how it looks like. Plus s90v is an upgrade to s30v. Both 940 and 940-1 are overpriced but if I have to pick one it would be the -1.

Love the 940 and 940-2, hate the 940-1. The 940-1 is slightly blade heavy, and that ruins it for me. (The 2 is basically as light as can be and still balance towards the handle.)

That’s funny,
I’ve always felt that both of my versions feel a tiny bit blade heavy, but it doesn’t matter as the knives are so light to begin with.

For the OP. Get the -1.

Make sure it is not a fake. Or where exactly is your balance point?
Straight from BM back when they stacked military and NRALOD discounts. It's long gone (purchased around the time they came out) so can't answer the latter exactly. It was in front of the index though (edit: front as in blade side of where your index finger sits).

Seems like GB940Rookie GB940Rookie agrees, so maybe yours is the odd one out(?)

I have a 940 and 940-2. The aluminum does take some marks but not nearly as easy as I thought it would. I’ve carried it for work doing landscaping, the finish has held up great.

The 940-2 is a great option if you’re worried about the aluminum marking up and don’t want to spend the extra for the 940-1. The aluminum handles are slightly thinner than the g10 on the 940-2 but the 940-2 blade is stone washed and shows less marks the the 940.

Love the 940-1 had one sold it and missed it so bought another .
I am partial to cf so really it’s just a matter of preference.

the only 940 i own. i love the al scales, think the wear gives it personally. besides i’m not too fond of carbon fiber. another thing i really like is the closed back of the handle. i’m not dead set against standoffs bit i prefer a full backspacer. this is one of my primary work carrie’s, i work in a school so a larger blade really isn’t an option, & you do get a lotta blade for such a small, slim knife

I went back and forth as many do with the 940 vs 940-1. Ended up going with the -1, and would never part with it. The weave they use on the carbon fiber is extremely attractive, just done flawlessly. I did have to send back to Benchmade as it came dull, they fixed it no problem and paid shipping as it was brand new.

The s90v steel and carbon fiber make it such a refined and elegant piece.

Another vote for the C.F. Scales, and S90V steel...
The 940-1 rocks the House!

The balance point of my 940-1 is at the lockbar position, seems a tiny bit more forward than other Benchmade folders, so it does seem to be a bit blade heavy. But I never feel it's an issue given the small difference. I never had a 940. The other I had is a 940-1501, which is a good variant.

My 940-1 was bought here. I did my homework before and after and I believe it's genuine.

I'm a bit surprised that folks can complain about the balance point being "slightly" off. It's a little folding pocket knife- balance point??? That might matter on a large folder, but incredibly nitpicky for a little knife. Is there a balance point on a cigarette? Is the balance point on your dinner fork slightly off? So disappointed that the balance point on my car keys is off a little bit?

Another vote for the 940-1. I believe it to be one of the greatest small folders ever designed!

Necro!!! Another vote for the 940-1. I'll take s90v over s30v any time for an edc knife...

^^^^ I also find the the whole balance thing on a small 2.5oz knife kind of a moot point. If anything, after I attach my hand and arm to the handle I find it a little rear heavy 🙃

I had a 940-1 a few years ago, and it kept slipping partially out of my pocket. I ended up losing it for good after only a couple weeks, so I never figured out the problem. I was guessing that either the pocket clip was loose or the CF scales were too slick. I don’t have any other CF handled knives, but I have not had pocket retention issues out of any of my other knives. Has anyone else had this problem with the 940-1?
