One of my friends has a BM94x...i think a 942SPL, specifically. Anyhow, during opening it is making an odd sound. It sounds like the spring is rubbing up against something. We're not sure if that's the problem, but it does sound like metal scratching something. Anyone have ideas on what the problem could be and the magnitude it might compromise the safety of using the knife.

As a note, he likes to keep the pivot very loose.
Thanks,
Kyle

If a shot of compressed air into the mechanism followed by a drop of oil doesn't quiet things down then it is time to send it back to Benchmade. I recommend against using a knife (any tool) that is not operating properly. Benchmade should be able to return the knife quickly. Your friend does have a spare knife to use, right :D?

P.S.: Notice we are talking about a broken Benchmade and I didn't say omega spring once. Doh!

Well, it has made the sound before, and then gone away. It doesn't seem to effect the operation of the knife; atleast not yet.

And yeah, he's got a couple spares.;)

It could be a broken omega spring. My 710 has made a scratching sound sometimes when one of the springs is broken. Knife still worked fine and locked up solid. It happened twice, both times I used it till the 2nd one broke and then sent it in.

Try pulling the bar back without moving the blade, then you can isolate where the problem is.

Is is a scratching sound that lasts longer than just a light click, or is it just a light clicking sound when you first start to open the knife with the thumbstud? I have noticed a light click when opening a couple of my new axis lock knives, and I think it is just the tip of the spring shifting in the hole that it fits in.
