9mm suggestions

I've been enjoying shooting my pistols lately. Almost any evening it is still relatively sunny when I get home I go out to my little range I mowed in my hayfield and shoot a few.

Been shooting my CZ52 a lot cause I got a case of the ammo, and my Ruger Mark 1 cause the ammo is cheap, even my Makarov some.

Lately I have been thinking about getting a 9mm since I don't have one, and the ammo is cheap. I keep going back and forth between a 9mm of some type, or a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 carbine cause I have dies and tons of brass for that.

But ANYWAY- I was wondering if you all had any reccomendations.

First this wouldn't really be for home defense. I have a Makarov and a .22 that are the home defense guns.

This would be mainly for shooting at targets.

I'd like a fairly long barrel too. And decent smooth trigger.

I've been looking at the Beretta and the Taurus 92's. I assume the Taurus is a clone of the Beretta. I've heard a lot of good feedback on both of those accuracy wise. Anybody here had either?

Then the other I have always liked is the Browning Hi Power. Just always thought that one was real comfortable, but can't remember much more cause last time I shot one was 30 years ago.

Also looked at Star Model B's on the lower budget end.

So anybody got any of these? How do they shoot? I am most interested in accuracy and jam free ness and trigger pull and good visible sights.

I would go for Glock 19 for the simplest auto around (Model 17 for normal barrel length, or Model 34 for somewhat extended). But trigger needs work to make it nice if you are picky. Hi-Power would probably be second and easy to get good trigger, but more complicated to shoot in a hurry.

Taurus 92 is clone of Beretta 92, except the safety is on the frame where it belongs, so it usable. Can be carried/stored cocked-n-locked or double action first shot. I have a Taurus 92 but I don't like it much. Decently accurate and OK trigger, but it is just a very big package for what it provides (but you do want the long barrel).

CZ75B beats the Hi-Power like a rented mule, and I really do think the Hi-Power is a fine pistol. Take a look at the 75B, you can cary it cocked and locked, it'll always go boom when you pull the trigger, and I'd be shocked if you didn't fall for it after the first round fired, probably after handling it. Hands down my favorite 9. Sorry to gush, but honestly, when I first got mine it was a similar feeling to the first time I got my hand on a real khuk, a kind of martial/tool using epiphany.

HD, if you get down this way any time soon, email me, and we can take mine out for a spin so you can get a feel for it. My local will rent you a few other 9's as well for comparison purposes, which is a real good idea prior to dropping any money on a pistol. Happy to take you along as a guest if you're down off the mountain.

based on your requirments...CZ75B o1 better version or try the 100

I would favor the 210 for a pure target pistol in 9mm.

While I really like the CZ-75B the way the slide is manufactured makes it hard for me to pull back. Other than the trigger the p-35 is an awesome pistol.

If you want something for pure target shooting how about a Hammerli .22 target pistol?

I've fired the Beretta in both 9mm and .40 S&W and will never own either. I can't hit the broad side of a barn with a Beretta and have heard from several sources that their current US production is substandard at best. The local pistol range won't carry them anymore for that reason. The Browning Hi-Power is a beautiful pistol and I've heard a number of good things about them. They are expensive but it looks like you get what you pay for. One that has caught my eye is the CZ-75. You can get a new one for less than $500 (a lot less if you look around) and the grip is just about perfect for me. I almost bought one at a gun show last month but decided to save my money instead. Good thing or I would never have been able to fix my new car. Let us know what you end up getting!

The gun store up the road has a bunch of CZ stuff. I'll go and check out one of those 75's. Thanks for the heads up. That's one I havent even thought about. Cool.

Yah,

Thanks for the offer but it's a pretty long drive.

Another nod to the CZ75.
I have feelers out for a black with night sights.
A fine piece
Tom

All of the above are good suggestions. You'd probably be happy with any of them. If you get the chance, handle and shoot a few to see what really rings your bell.

The only 9mm I've owned that I kept is a Glock 34, more for the ease of maintenance than anything else. I don't have any complaints.

I forgot about the CZ, it has indeed been getting some good reports lately. The Springfield XD as well.

I read your first post again and saw you said wouldn't be for home defence, I read it the other way. If you're target shooting only I would really go for a good .22 targetish pistol. Perhaps not something in a nontraditional style, but something like a Ruger Mk II with the long heavy barrel and some internal upgrades would be very cool. More bang for the buck of ammo. Or a nice .38 revolver.

I have a nice old Mark 1 that shoots great. I'd just like a 9mm because of the larger bore pistols the ammo is the cheapest and I want something large bore.

I got an old Mark I that's a family heirloom...started out with a rather dark history, but for me it's nuthin' but good memories...very sentimental, and a straight and reliable shooter. Nuthin' gives me more pleasure than outshootin' the hell outta my buddies with thier Sig target pistols, Buckmarks, etc. with the ole girl... :D

Now as far as the CZ 75...I'm mildly intrigued...I'd like to hear more. Are there aftermarket parts available for them? Spring kits, night sights, grips, etc? an idio syncracy of them is also no decocker, right?

My wifes been coveting a Hi-Power for alot of years now, so it seems a CZ may also be worth a look. (She's lookin' to scale down from her 1911 due to carpal tunnel and bursitis)

I got in on the original importation of the XD precursor, the HS2K (searchable on the net and in archives at Glocktalk).

It's an awesome piece...reliable, accurate and tough. The only bad thing was what Springfield did with the price. I paid an embarassingly low price for it...should have ordered a dozen.

There is a lot to be said for hi cap 9s...especially for zombies.

You didn't mention pricerange.

I'd say the Hi-Power, but their triggers are AWFUL out of the box. You gotta take the mag safety out, polish the bearing parts, replace springs... blah, blah. I did mine. It was a heck-of-a fun home project and a source of great pride and gave me a 4lb. glass-rod trigger. Visit Cylinder & Slide's website and see all the things you can do to a Hi-Power and have fun. Or you could have somebody else do all that.

OR...

Buy a Beretta Elite. I had one and sold it because I didn't like the slide-mounted decocker and the size of the thing. It was the most stupid thing I've done - I should have LEARNED to like the size and the frame decocker because that thing shot like a DREAM! It was exponentially more accurate than a standard Beretta.

In my opinion, forget the Glock. Don't get me wrong - I love Glocks and one of my very few autos is a Glock, but a Glock is an excellent WEAPON period. If you're looking for something fun to shoot get something different.

Personally, I've always wanted to try a Kahr. I'll probably get around to getting one someday - that's if I ever buy another auto. ;)

Another vote for the CZ75B. Mine is a superb handling pistola with 15rd mag capacity. Its the only DA handgun that I can get 1st round DA hits with. Also have a Browning thats a favorite but its almost too nice to shoot.

Long barreled, accurate 9mm?
Luger Artillery Model.

Let me suggest something different.

First, the Sig 210 is out. The original poster was joking when he mentioned it- it's a fine and very accurate pistol, but if you're wanting to buy something fun in an economical caliber- if you even need to mention economics, the 210 is out.

I personally have liked the Berettas I've used (my issue M9 did have poor sights, though), as well as the Taurus I used to own. I can shoot a Beretta well and fast, and as a target pistol, I don't think its size is a detractor.

The Kahr Arms pistols are great- and have an incredible trigger for DAO- but the problem is the short barrel. Voila- I give you the Kahr Target 9. Available with stainless frame, or with polymer frame for reduced weight and slightly reduced cost, this should be a fine-shooting, still-concealable pistol that your children will be proud to own. Here she is:
