Well, back to you guys again. What kind of sheets to you use on your 9" grinders. I'm not finding anything ceramic or really durable. What am I missing.

I recently got some silicon carbide paper off of eBay for a pretty decent price: Starke/Matador (not sure which is the brand name, they're both printed on the paper). It's made in Germany and was recommended by somebody around here not long ago.

This ^. Great paper, cheap, lasts long. Holds up well to windex and wd-40

for some reason I'm not seeing this......how do you get it to last long and what grit are you referring to?

Sure these are only $1.25 per sheet plus the adhesive plus your time.
I've certainly tried them and use them but I don't find them lasting.

I much prefer the earlier referenced Ceramic Blaze discs.

Yes they are 5x the price but since I only make $8 per hour knife-making I figured it doesn't make much difference :-)

looking forward to your enlightenment here

PS there's my 2000 nd post, is there some prize or pin available? haha

I'm sure ceramic disks last longer than rhynowet, but the rhynowet last longer than any other sheet I've tried including Matador, klingspor, 3m.

And it's only .50 per sheet from supergrit. I need to get some of those blaze disks though. People talk about labeling and reusing paper sheets which I can't understand, it's generally blown when I've completed the task I stuck it on for. Or enough that I'd rather spend the 50 cents on a fresh piece.

Yes I'm getting around $.50 a sheet as well ordering it in bulk. I go to the disk at 120 to start on steel, 50 or 60 on scales but I use wood sandpaper on that. I've tried a few different hardware store sandpapers and even some of the expensive automotive sandpaper which works well but isn't cost effective. The rhynowet has performed best for me. It stays together when I remove it from the disk as well.

I think it lasts longer when you use windex or wd40 and go slow, maybe 500-1000 rpms.
I have one of those belt cleaner sticks I also use.
Much like belts though, the higher grits don't last me very long, but by that time I'm ready to hand sand.

I'm no expert though, this just works well for me at this time.

None of the papers I use last very long and I change them literally every minute. Nothing gets you where you want to be on a blade like fresh paper. I use Rhynowet, Matador by Starke, Norton Black Ice, and other 3M papers depending on the price. ( also a brand just called USA) I try to buy 100 sheets at a time and seem to spend about 65 cents per sheet on average. I don't think its wise to shop price much unless you buy several grits in 100 piece packs considering the overall cost per knife and importance of getting a crisp good blade finish. Everyone has their favorite here but I keep a stack of several papers and use them like they were free. I spray water on paper if it's 320 grit and above for a fine finish. I have not tried blaze discs but I am going to try some today in 220 and 320. Larry

I use the Rynowet Redline for blade finishing. I spray windex on the disc. It seems to keep the dust down and makes the paper last longer.

I've been using WD40 to sand, have any of you windex users used both? Why Windex? I've been thinking of using some dish soap in a spray bottle with water. Might try that tonight.

Speed control - if you can - and I water spray the disc as I go. I believe it helps lots even on 60 grit. I use the Rynowet and Sia. I don't worry about destroying the paper for grit changes since I have one disc for each grit. I have a magnetic disc machine.

looking forward to your report on these ceramic discs vs the paper sheets

Harbeer, I could not find the 9 inch discs in anything finer than 120 grit and the price was about ten times what I pay for premium papers from 3m, Norton, and Starke. I might pay extra for good 220 grit paper. I settled for buying some 150 grit Norton paper for today. Tru grit sells the 9 inch blaze in 120 grit for about $6.60 per sheet...a little too high for me. Larry

Well, I ordered some Rhinowet 9x11 and round blaze disks for a comparable today. Will give them both a try and see how much better the Blaze is. Will get back you, but don't hold your breath. It may take a while.
Best to all.

The Blaze discs are pricey but they last a long time.

They're the same as Blaze belts except they're shaped different and they go roundy-round sideways. Same grit material, same backing, everything.

They're only available in the coarse grits like y'all mentioned. Use them for rough grinding. Turn the speed up high and lean into it.

Then switch to the Rhynowet or other papers for finishing.

I bought 250 sheets of 3m 600 grit wet/dry off ebay for $105.00 including shipping, I have never used anything except klingspor, 3m and Norton. I like them all and like Larry said I keep the paper fresh.
