A2 quenches well in oil. You get less oxidation than in air.
I started plate quenching it about three years ago, after oil quenching it for years before that. I prefer the plate quench for all air quench rated steels, but you can oil quench any of them.
Welcome to Blade Forums!!!
Just for fun I Tried to cool a 1/2 plate that I was hardening. It was way under critical temp and it cracked. That's what you get for fooling around.
But for knives I find Aluminum plate Quenching to be Great for keeping the blades straight and attaining a good Rockwell hardness. FWIW.
I've been marquenching it in peanut oil @ 400 degrees with very good results, then I use Steve's tempering recommendations to take care of the retained austenite.

Thanks.
I quenched in 30w oil then oven tempered. The steel holds a edge very well. It will still shave hair off my arm after cutting through a 1 inch thick manila rope twice. I also tried to drill through the tang to see what would happen. It burnt up a good $3 titanium bit.
I'm gonna call it good and put handle scales on it now.
