So my 8yr. old son Jared and I have been working on a little project. He has takin a great intrest in knives and woodslore projects. So, we decided to put together a fire making kit. He loves to come out to the shop and play with the fire steel. (Under my supervision of coarse.) So today I decided to put him to the test to see if he could make fire using his new skills. Now let it be known, he had very little help. Some help, but very little. I have no dought with a little practice he can do this 100% on his own. Here is what we had to work with:
1. Firepit. He gathered the small pieces of wood from the yard, and I cut the larger pieces up.
2. A homemade fire staring kit. Which consisted of a Magua blank that warped in heat threat. Vasaline coated cotton balls stuffed in a camel chewnig tobaco tin donated by a co-worker, and a fire steel.
3. A eager 8yr. old boy
First, he layed down a good base
Took and spread out some of the vasaline coated cotton balls
And then struck away, it was hard for me to take pics of this, but even though it took him a few tries, he got it
Sissy decided to get in on the action and help
Fire! Fire! Fire!
