A backpack for long family dayhikes ?????

Snugpak Sleeka Force 35. It's is a great day pack, not too big but plenty big enough. I know a website that has them right now, new for $55 shipped. That's a great deal. The site is not a sponser here so I can't post a link, but if you'll PM me I can give it to you. Regards

I'd go light and fairly large for that. Big because it'll probably get fleeces and whatnot in it that are bulky but not really heavy. Personally, I like my Karrimor Hot Rock 30. It's compresses down nicely and doesn't weigh very much at all empty, and it carries well when full. On the return leg at the end of a day when all the food has been eaten, most of the water drank, and the warm layers put on, it feels good not to be humping a big lump of bag needlessly. Here's a review of mine. Sure, it's not what I pick for off trail use but sometimes toughness is over-rated. Plus there are contexts where one can look a complete burk toting around military or pseudo-military kit with MOLLE and Gucci attachments. Here's mah woman next to the Rock 30 at the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew:
